Replacing radiator next. Question

I have three 3rd gens in the household and I really need to replace the radiators in all of them. All have automatic transmission so the part number should be 16410-YZZAJ.

Question, does the radiator come with the caP? It seems like camelback alludes to the the "radiator assembly" coming with a cap, but I am not certain. Thanks.

Oh, and thanks for posting the discount code to camelback in an other thread.

Cap looks like separate as it has its own part number and no remark about the cap in the radiator description.
Get the radiator hoses too, at least the top hose as it deals with the hot coolant. Stay with OEM and use OEM hose clamps.

The cap is definitely a separate part and doesn't come with the radiator. These caps are known to fall apart and the little plastic center piece and spring end up dropping into the radiator. I've seen this on several 3rd Gens now since I started working on different people's rigs making videos.

I second [MENTION=85046]nissanh[/MENTION] recommendation to replace the both hoses at the same time and DO NOT get rid of the OEM constant tension clamps and replace them with those crappy screw-down type. The constant tension clamps can easily last the lifetime of the truck and keep a better seal for your coolant hoses.
 
Just did this last weekend, it does not come with a cap and I would also recommend replacing the upper and lower hoses.

I flushed the system several times before putting the new radiator in as to not contaminate it. It was pretty nasty.

I just bought one of these radiators for my 98 and unfortunately this Denso one doesn't appear to be as well made as the ones they were carrying a couple years ago. I paid around $200 for an OEM radiator for my 2000 and was wondering why the price had dropped to $120.

The differences I saw is the return line fitting on the trans cooler doesn't seem to be as stout and the drain doesn't have the nice little hole that directs the fluid straight down. I guess with this radiator, you just unscrew it some and it dribbles out between the threads. I wish it had the hole because that's a better design. The radiator does fit well though and hopefully it will do it's job for a long time. I think for me, since it's not that expensive, I'll swap it out for another one in 100k miles.
 
Tim, I noticed in your video that the price was a lot higher on your receipt. Wondered why the ncurrent ones were 120.

I agree Tim. The drain on the original one is much better than the replacement. The plastic felt thinner/weaker too... fingers crossed.
 
OK, it looks like part # 00272-1LLAC-01 is the coolant and it appears to be the concentrate. If so, Camelback has it for $19.85. If it is the concentrate, that's a good price.

Anybody know if that's the concentrate where you have to add water?

Wow, that is a good price on the coolant. Yes, you'll need to add distilled water. I bought a bucket with quart measurements to make getting the mix right.

I usually just buy the Toyota Red concentrate at my local dealer and pick up some distilled water at the grocery store. I pay more at the dealership but it gives me a reason to be there so I keep a good relationship with the parts department employees. They have been very helpful to me so I like going in there from time to time to show my face. When there's a part I need right now, I usually visit the dealer. Since they know I have a YouTube channel working on Toyotas, they hook me up with a discount that makes it closer to online prices.

You'll need over 2 gallons so you'll have to buy 2 gallons of concentrate. Having some type of container with graduated measuring lines so you can accurately make a 50/50 mix is nice to have.

I use this container a lot. When I'm draining out transmission fluid, I know exactly how much I drained out. When I'm draining coolant, it's large enough to hold to hold the entire amount that drains out.

This next container is good for motor oil, ATF and coolant. For motor oil, you can buy the larger 5 quart containers and measure how much you're adding in like for that 6th quart our engines take. Same goes for the ATF. You can buy the larger containers and accurately measure how much you're adding in. For the coolant, you can safely add a gallon of concentrate followed by a gallon of distilled water into your radiator but then you want to add a 50/50 mix to top it off the rest of the way. I use this container to make the 50/50 mix so I can top off the radiator and the overflow container.

Oh, you guys still use Toyota Red? It's recommended for the 2nd Gen 4Runners but the Toyota Pink Long-Life is better for 3rd Gens. Lasts longer, still plays nice with aluminum and is cheaper.

I use red in the 4Runner and my Supra. Haven't looked to see what's in my '17 Taco, but will use what is recommended.
 
You'll need to get fluids at your local dealer. Camelback won't ship fluids.

I'd stick with Toyota Red and the more-regular change interval. If there is any leftover fluid in there when you put in the Pink, it doesn't keep the "Super Long Life" characteristics anymore anyway.

OK, my head is about to explode reading all the threads here and elsewhere about Pink and Red Toyota antifreeze. Is there a year model breakdown that is factory endorsed as to what year models get what color coolant?? :wow:

The pink and red coolants are compatible. The pink is just a 50/50 ready to use mix. The red is a concentrate. If you don't mind mixing, buying the concentrate will save you money.

What's funny is people at Toyota don't seem to know this fact. There's guys at my local dealership parts department that swear you can't mix the two. When we did the coolant flush on [MENTION=102606]infamousRNR[/MENTION] rig, we did mix some pink with the red and Sean's truck hasn't exploded yet.
