'98 Front End Rebuild

Wellllllll, hit an elk and have settled with insurance. Incredibly sad. I bought my '98 brand new. Feel like I lost a friend. ...but hopefully not for long. I'm going to rebuild it. The way I look at it, better the devil you know than the devil you don't. I'm highly doubtful I could find another truck as great as mine for less than what it will cost me to rebuild.

Frame is still straight, luckily. I think the tow hitch front and back helped protect the frame.

Been SOOOOO GRATEFUL to this community over the last 26 yrs. Heck, my purchase probably predates this forum. Heck, it almost predates the internet lol.

I figure maybe this thread might help others in the future. I've included the part numbers and camelback toyota's prices. Anything discontinued by toyota is preceded with an asterisk.

The damage is from the fan clutch forward. In other words, it appears pretty much everything motor related is fine.

I've begun to assemble a parts list which I've posted below. My questions:

1. Is my parts list missing anything that stands out?

2. Any parts upgrades you'd recommend?

3. Know where I could get some OEM or OEM-ish parts for less? (I'd consider used on some parts)

4. Any parts you'd definitely go OEM?

5. Need solutions for those parts that are discontinued ("*"). PS: Passenger Side; DS: Driver Side

6. Any good resources for finding used parts online?

Note. Timing belt job was done recent enough that I don't need to do it now. I've got enough to deal with!

Start with Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market for searching junkyards. I'd try to find used OEM parts for all the body bits and other non-wear items. Get new coolers and moving mechanical parts (fan, radiator, hoses, condenser, reciever/drier, etc.).

Any pics? Depending on speed, an elk could do some serious damage...

Dang! Not sure why I didn't see an email notification. First, THANKS (to all that respond). I'm going w/ a junk yard pump but putting a new reservoir on it as it will likely have a very clogged screen and I happen to have a new one sitting in my parts bin.

Have had great luck grabbing everything!

Bought OEM: belts, ac drier, intake duct (at fender), radiator.

Bought new (non-oem): radiator support assembly (ebay), ac condenser (performance radiator-phx), bumper & valence (amazon).

EVERYTHING else i scored in junk yards.

3 Outstanding Items:

1. Headlights. Not sure what to do. Seems like there's manufacturing defects w/ a popular after market brand that's reasonably priced. Would really like bright headlights. Was happy w/ the auxito drop in bulbs but I've read that they'll be even brighter w/ a newer headlamp because the reflectivity degrades over time. My thought: I want really bright headlights because I don't want to mount a light bar. this truck wont be my daily driver.

2. Bumper turn signals. I've seen some on amazon. They're clear. I'm kind of leaning towards what was in there prior (orange colored oem).

3. Grill. Not sure if i want the same oem that was there or go w/ one that has 'TOYOTA' spelled out.

none of the the 3 above slow the body work down. so i have a bit to consider. welcome any input.

GOD I LOVE HOW EASY IT IS TO WORK ON THIS TRUCK, FIND PARTS AND SWAP THINGS!!!!

THANKS! I happened it upon the site early in my searches. Great website. after searching for the parts, i noted the contact info for the parts sellers and then gave them calls. Saved a ton of work imo.

so far i've spent $1050 on the parts. happy.

keep in mind walking into the toyota dealer w/ a parts list was over $5000 (for those parts not discontinued). placing the same order, for the same parts, at the same dealer...but online: it was just about $3000 (for the parts not discontinued). smh.

The '99+ headlights bolt right on. The aftermarket versions aren't as nice as OEM, but they will be new and (relatively) bright. Quality halogen bulbs and a headlight harness will help too (get more voltage to the bulbs) if you don't want beyond the OEM lights.

Make sure you get the early style turn signals. OEM '99+ front turns are clear, so don't confuse them with aftermarket '96-'98 style.

Grill is your choice. They are all mechanically compatible from '96-'02.

Speaking of bulbs...wondering if you can shed any "light." haha

I had auxito led's for headlight bulbs. worked much better, the hi-beams worked fine but the hi-beam indicator in the dash wouldn't work. I'd also like to swap in LED's for the interior, turn signals and reverse lights.

1. Is there any way to restore the hi-beam indicator light in the dashboard while still using LED's?

2. anything i need to prepare for if i replace the reverse lights in terms of other things not functioning correctly?

The high beam indicator relies on a low resistance low beam filament as the feed to the high beam indicator. I have a headlight relay harness, and I solved the issue with a couple high wattage resistors that mimic the low beam filament. "CANBUS" load resistors will work here. They will get hot.

The reverse lights should be fine as-is, though you might also need a (smaller) resistor to make sure there are no errors.

You will need a new turn signal flasher if you replace the turn signal bulbs with LED.

There are tons of options out there... I did modify the load resistors I got to only have the low beam side resistors. If you do a relay harness, make sure it is ground switched (Toyota/Subaru style).

Nice job. If you haven't already fixed your no high beam indicator issue, Auxito customer service sent me 2 resistors for free. You only need to install one.

unfortunately the adapter rings for the auxito's broke in the accident and auxito would sell me replacements. so theyre dead to me.

i went w another company's lights. novsight. they put the auxito's i had to shame. 40k lumen. zero need for light bars, ditch lights now.
