Replacing Shocks 04 Sport

I have an 04 sport with x-reas and I could not find a definitive answer in my question in the search.

Can I buy the none Xreas shocks to replace the old xreas? I’m looking Bilstein 5100.

Or do I have to buy 5100 with xreas and not hook it up?

One other question. Do I have to also replace the springs?

If you any other advice please send it my way.

The best thing to do is scrap the x-reas completely. I had a dealer quote me $4,000 to replace it and most indies won't touch it. The x-reas shocks & struts alone were $2,600 and just replacing the shocks and/or the struts is wasted cash if there's a leak in the system. And those prices were from several years ago and they're no doubt much higher now.

From what I've read, I believe the shocks are connected via opposite corners so if you replace the fronts with normal assemblies you have to also replace the rears. The first thread seems to have some good info. The link after that is a sticky to all things suspension.

BTW, if you want a cheap route that will last the life of the car, just put used Gen 5 takeoffs on it. The ones I put on my truck were off a 6 month old Gen 5 runner that got lifted. All that is needed is a bit of trimming on the lower shock eyelet.

I had xreas on mine and replaced with standard Bil 4600 {similar to 5100). I also chose to replace the springs with new '07 FJ springs, but not necessary. Once you remove your xreas shocks just pull off the rest of the system from the frame.

I had the xreas system in my ’05 4R Ltd/V8. One cross system line developed a leak from rust rendering it inoperative. Replacement components from the dealership were very pricey as noted by other members. To the best of my knowledge, no aftermarket replacement units were/are available. The OEM system is pressurized and
DYI installation can be difficult to ensure no pressure loss during the install.
I replaced the entire system with regular shocks, reusing the front springs which fitted nicely. The xreas OEM shocks cannot be reused.
If you also have the air suspension option, like mine, I’ll suggest you keep it ( if its still operational ). I kept mine. I believe the ride quality is better ( vs springs).
If you decide to junk the air suspension, you’ll have to remove the two air bladders over the rear axle and replace them with a pair of springs ( replacement kits available from auto parts stores ).
Yes, there was a slight leaning of the vehicle when rounding corners when compared with the xreas suspension, but not enough to be off putting IMO. Also depends on what shocks one decided to use. Bilsteins are popular and also $$.
