Replacing stock 4Runner Radio, a couple questions.

Hi,

It's time to replace the stock 2002 4Runner CD Player/FM radio. (It won't play my CD-R's anymore for some reason and gives me an ERR- message)

But the new radio is slimmer, just a regular CD player. So my question is where can I get a sleeve, or a pocket, something that would fit underneath to cover the remaining whole? Is hooking up as easy as wiring the cables or should I expect some trouble?

You need a head unit installation kit.

You may also need a car wiring harness as well as a radio wiring harness(unless your head unit comes with it.)

i dont know crutchfield was about $20 more than the ebay price. but including the pocket, free shipping, wiring, and such made it basically same price. except i'm actually dealing with a business.

Yes, when I searced crutchfield, they were overpriced. But might be worth it if includes everything.

And where did you get the rear view mirror with the temperature, and how much is it? How hard is it to install?

Where did you get that cell phone holder, nad how much?

it all comes out in the wash. they are not overpriced after you factor in shipping, the harness, and the piece to fill in the hole. they are a good company.

Go to any stereo shop, and tell them you need a pocket and harness. Use your original brackets (they are metal, not cheap plastic like the kits), and search for the install write-up on here. Not hard to do at all. Set asaide about 1 hour, and you'll be on your way!!

its a wash if you go to online retailers with pricey kits.

if you buy the parts individually through froogle, you save a lot (this is what i did and i got a $400 head unit, wiring, pocket, etc for a whopping $250).

crutchfield is fine if you have the money to spend, but if youre looking to get a good deal, id look elsewhere.

The best thing (and reason I use them) about Crutchfield is their customer service. The installation kits are a nice touch, free shipping is great, and their prices are about the same as Best Buy and other chains BUT when you get something from Crutchfield they back it up. I have old Jeeps (CJ's). They like to leak water down behind the dash right on top of the radio. Over the years I've tried several different ways to fix this problem but the end result up till about a year ago (finally found a way to fix it) was a radio that quit working due to moisture. I've sent 4 or 5 of these back to Crutchfield up to a year and a half after I purchased them and they replaced them every time for no charge, even though it was totally the fault of the vehicle and not the head unit. I was attempting to have the units repaired, not out for a free lunch, but they said "no problem" and sent me new units. They did the same thing with JBL speakers that blew after about 6-8 months. They did the same thing with my Kenwood DVD player that quit working 14 months after I purchased it (replaced with a pioneer unit at my request). My last head unit I had in my Accord was purchased from Crutchfield, I got it, installed, and decided I didn't like the controls so I called them and they paid for me to ship it back AND paid to ship the new one to me. You can always find stuff cheap on evilbay and the net, but if you order from a fly-by-night operation and that $400 head unit craps out you're stuck with a $400 paperweight. Customer service makes the 5% higher price worth it to me. The last wet head unit I had I sent in (couple of years ago) and since Crutchfield is now a Kenwood repair center they actually tore into it and sent it back with "unrepairable, water damage" and didn't replace it, but since then I've had the home DVD player, the speakers, and the swap for my Accord. You can't beat that kind of CS.

well your "5%" is actually around 40%

if you know what your buying, and dont buy from "just anywhere", you can get much better pricing from wholesalers on brand new items that come with their own warranties.

if you own a jeep, that alone makes you worry about warranties more, so of course you love crutchfield

heh, Just Empty Every Pocket. My Jeeps' warranties ran out before most people on this board were born. Too bad I couldn't get a CJ with a Toyota drivetrain (ok so it could be done but at what cost?). Yota's are built better mechinically and anything looks better than the DC chrysler crap they make now but everybody loves a CJ. It's unAmerican to not like a CJ.

My point was Crutchfield takes care of their customers even on things (like all of my examples) that AREN'T covered by the manufacturers warranties. I'm all for saving money but sometimes I'll pay up a bit for some insurance. So far it's paid off for me. If a person is on here asking how to make a din stereo fill a double din hole I think Crutchield's directions and install package would be worth the extra cash. Not everyone is an installation guru.......

On the stereos I've bought Crutchfield is as cheap as anyone else. When you get in on the low to mid price point everybody's about the same. Maybe it's different when you get the high end stuff but hey it's a car stereo, not a home theatre.

your points are well taken, but i guess my point is that through my personal experience, i have gotten MUCH MUCH MUCH better pricing than crutchfield which left plenty of money to pay someone to install it while still coming out ahead of the crutchfield price. :arrow:
