I recommend removing it before you take the valve covers off and replace it all with some corrugated plastic tubing. It's flexible, dirt cheap, it'll stand up to the temps just fine and it looks much cleaner than wrapping with tape. You have the right idea, there's no real sense in keeping it since it's practically a hazard with how brittle they are. A piece is begging to come off and go down the intake so much sure to block that off too

What diameter do you recommend for the wiring loom? I will make sure to get a high temperature stuff

Not sure, I just grabbed some stuff laying in my garage. Probably around 1.25" would be my guess but it's been a while

It's best to bag and label your fasteners as you go. This takes the guesswork out of it when it's time to put things back together.

Hey man,
Can I ask - did you do the FRONT camshaft plugs as well? Or just the rear ones? The one one the front passenger side seems impossible to get out (due to clearance from the radiator mount in front of it). Just curious if you did the front ones as well, and if you didn't - was it for the same reason, or some other reason?
Anyone here have a response? Thanks!

A year or more ago with the help of this write up and the FSM, I replaced the valve cover gaskets. I struggled with the driver side, and based on someone else's write-up I didn't bother replacing the camshaft plug on the left side.

Yep. it was leaking.

I went back today and re-did the left side. Took about five hours. Crossing my fingers this takes care of things.

I'll go back one day and replace some hard as rock, cracked hoses. None of those seem to cause issues.

This has proven a great resource!

Just did this on my 02 4x4. It was leaking horribly from the cam cap on the passenger side. All good now! Pretty involved job but easy
