Replacing windshield

Hello,

Wondering if anyone replaced the windshield on your 4runner can let me know who much that cost? Should I get it replaced at the dealer or just regular places that do windshield replacement?

My wife's 4runner got hit by something yesterday while she was driving, and caused a 8-9 inch crack on her windshield. That seems to be common in Houston.

I dont know how it is in Houston, but I wouldn't go to a dealer. Over here theres good quality glass shops. Some shops even send someone over to you, I had my glass broken, not the widnow, the wing widnow of the rear passenger side. And they came here to replace it, I looked inside his van and there are like 10 windsheilds haha.
 
I bought my first Toyota about a week ago and unfortunately I'm already in need of a new windshield. Here's what I think I'm going to do.

My dealer quoted $1,020 for the glass and apx. $150 for the labor. (They use an outside company to install the glass)

I called another dealership out of state that sold me some floor mats pretty cheap and they quoted me $785 for the glass + shipping.

Then I got the name of the glass company that my local dealer uses and I'm going to have them install it.

Note: The glass on the '06 models is in fact thicker, so when shopping for the glass make sure they pull it up by VIN to ensure that you get the proper glass. Also, make sure you order the molding pieces as well.

Does your AUTO Insuarance not cover the windshield? State Farm replaced my windshield with $0 out of pocket and they replaced it with Toyota Glass.
 
I've had my windshield replaced 3 times since I've owned the 4Runner and I must say that having the Full Glass coverage on my insurance was well worth it !!!
 
Shop around... you'll often find that dealers actually use 3rd party auto glass companies anyway (many around here do). If you can find out who your local stealership uses then you could go straight to that company and get it done cheaper.

My auto policy covered the replacement of my windshield except for the $50 deductible. I specified a Toyota windshield and used a well know chain in my area to do the install. I also opted to drop my 4Runner off at their shop for the job. The idea of their mobile unit doing the job in the parking lot at my office with no shade in the hot summer seemed like I was asking for trouble.
 
I just had my windshield cracked last Friday by a rock or something that I never saw, it must have flown up on the highway but there were no other cars anywhere around me so I have no clue where the rock came from. Anyway, I have Allstate Insurance and they sent someone out the following day to fill the crack at no charge. I HATE THE REPAIR THAT WAS DONE! I've only had my 4Runner for 8 months and my deductible for a replacement windshield is $100. I heard somewhere that the replacement glass was not as good as the OEM glass so I am doing some research of my own. The insurance company does not like the glass installer that I have selected and instructed me to go back to the same company that did the repair and have them replace the glass. I do not want to do that so now I have to find out what I am entitled to under my policy because I am not buying most of the stuff the adjuster is telling me.

Skip the dealer. The dealer will have the work contracted out to a glass shop. I called my local dealers and they quoted $100-150 more than Safe-Lite ($600 for OEM glass, $500 for aftermarket), they said over the phone that they will have a contracted glass shop come to the dealer and do the work. I had my Camry windsheild replaced by Safe-Lite. A mobile unit came out and replaced it on my driveway.

I believe there's a law that prohibits insurance companies from requiring the work be done at their shops and the owner is free to choose a shop they want.

When Safe-Lite did my Camry windshield, I was told I can request for OEM glass and they have to honor my requeset without me paying more. However, insurance companies will not offer OEM glass because aftermarket is cheaper. The installer said, aftermarket and OEM glass are the same sans "Toyota" on the glass and quality wise are same as well, because it has to meet Federal safety standards. He said there's no such thing as gray market glass, because any glass doesn't meet Federal safety standards doesn't make it out the factory. The glass meets a hammer before it exits the backdoor.
 
Thanks for the info Uneek. I am going to call the adjuster today and request that I have my windshield replaced by my Toyota dealer service center since those are the only people who have ever touched my 4Runner except for the detailer and myself.
 
i have a good friend who works at a toyota dealership and he had my windshield replaced for me by the same people the dealership uses for 400 even. look around and you'll find some decent prices.
 
'87 windshield trim

I have a 1987 4runner.
Does anyone know the proper installation technique of a 1st gen windshield? Specifically, do the plastic clips of the metal trim get imbedded in the sealant material? Or, do the clips and trim get installed in such a way as to be able to remove the metal trim, without disturbing the windshield?
I have mixed opinions from local windshield shops and the dealership is clueless.

I'm still waiting on a report of somone that has replaced there 2003-2005 windshield with a 2006. Currently my windshield is fine, I would be willing to try it if that changes, but I had hoped someone else has done it by now. Anyone?
 
Does anyone here know a source for 1st gen 4runner windshield glass? I can find nothing local and am getting frustrated and nervous as my glass cracking is getting worse…..
 
insurance coverage all depends on if you have a glass replacement policy. Simply implying insurance should cover this cost is wrong, unless you chose glass replacement coverage and then, there's your deductible. Your cost will solely depend on the coverage you've elected for your vehicle.
