resale values of 3rd gen 4runners

Can you call something overpriced when the 200k mile examples seem to sell consistently for 6k? People wouldn't be asking so much if they weren't selling. Personally, if I had a 4runner I was selling with 145,000 mi I'd be asking closer to 10k and expect to sell it around 9k. I've seen plenty in that range and they're all gone within a week or so.

Which is still cheaper than your average used Tacoma. It's the main reason I have one vs. the other. In my area, a Taco that is in roughly equivalent condition and options as a 4Runner counterpart will sell for 4-5K more (if you can even find one).

I ain't paying an extra 5K just for an open cargo area.

02 limited with 100K? car is grarge kept so underbody is in really good shape.. its got a dent on the rear bumper . has remote start (dealer installed).

also has an aftermarket 3rd row seat installed, was $2K made for 3rd gens, bolts in and is dot approved. (should i leave this in or try to sell seperately).

Depends what you are looking for. Low miles is nice but I'd be looking for a manual & locker. 01 & 02's aren't attractive to me. Unless they're Imperial Jade & S/C'd!

If its the red truck I think it is, 5500 or what ever is well under cali market value. Pricing is highly determined by the location of thr car and its popularity in the area. The fact that they disclose the negatives should give you reassurance on the purchase and why Im assuming its already priced low. Clean built ones with 250k miles sell with ease between 6-10k all day on the west coast as 4runners have jumped in popularity. Overlanding is the next "Stance" trend... So lots of guys coming into the scene with lots of money to burn as building these trucks is much cheaper than most show cars.

We picked up a 1 owner '99 sr5 with a 5 speed manual. It has 170kmi on it and was virtually rust free, reasonably maintained and had tires on the edge of needing to be replaced. The Timing Belt was quickly becoming due and I think the rear axle seal was showing signs of needing attention. Also had a rear diff lock.

I think we over paid a little but not much based on what I saw when searching for it. too bad the kid got in a light accident and it was totaled. Just bought at '98 with a blown motor and 220kmi on it we are going to transplant the '99 motor in to.

Here in the northeast they seem to be much more in line with KBB value. They're not as hot of a commodity as out west, but they're all going to be rusty.

Most of the CL posts in the NYC area have very sparse information, clearly these are not cars that belonged to enthusiasts and might have questionable history. Most will probably need several thousand put into them to make them worthy, but you can find them for $3k-$4k.

Here in NJ. The Tacoma is much much more expensive to buy then a 4runner. Like the same Tacoma that has he 3.4 and frame.

B) yes, 4rs hold insane value. i would guess that has something to do with the perfect SUV size, coupled with the fact that they're one of the last truly overbuilt toyotas that will do 400k miles plus

- vehicle was garage kept by senior owner / frame & floor are in extremely good shape
- it has tiny dent on the rear bumper, but zero sheet metal dents or scratches
- original paint with zero panel rust & interior is super clean...overall, a 9.5 out of 10, even clear coat is perfect
- maintained at Toyota/Lexus Dealership, since new
- before trade in / new timing belt, OEM radiator & BFG tires
- sold to my buddy through a Dealer-2-Dealer Auction
- 1.5 years ago: this friend sold it to me for $7,000 US$ (or Paid $9,000 Cdn), including Govn. safety check & E-test
- included in the purchase price was 4 wheel premium brake job, rear axle seals & Koyo bearings, LBJ, muffler

^^ Up in the winter rock-salt belt with liquid calcium also sprayed on black road ice / these solid Gen3's are long gone (rusted out) and exceptional ones are extremely rare now...like hens teeth.
- today's price in this region, for most solid examples, are $10,000 US$ or 12,000 Cdn with low Km.
- but try and find one, in S/W Ontario...big demand here - but no local supply

seems when i mention these other prices owners bark at me.. like actually car dealerships do..

guys seeks 5500..
yet kbb/edmunds has it more like 4500..

^^ $4,500 is a BS valuation in many regions, for Top-quality T4R ... as Dealers practice buying Low & Sell High.
- so at time of trade-in...they want to show &/or quote Low Valuation guides
- kbb & edmunds are used to scoop good Gen3, at the Lowest price...for profitable resale
Banks & Finance Company's don't want to give out inflated vehicle loans either...Lower # protects their paper investment.

so i am curious what the 4runner community
values certain years and miles as their true value as..

97 w/140k sr5 4x4
98 w/140k sr5 4x4
99 w/140k sr5 4x4
00 w/140k sr5 4x4

1999-2000 are iconic years, & hold marginally Higher values over 1997-98 models...how much is anybodies guess.
- and its more than having cup holders, in center console

I apologize if this is not allowed, but I am a new member & do not have enough posts to start a new thread.

There is a 98 4runner listed I am interested in & have emailed the seller about it. I am a female, & at the moment do not have a significant other or a male friend that knows anything about 4runners who can go with me to look at the truck.

Ad - 275K miles. V6 4WD Toyota 4Runner, engine has been rebuilt all new seals, drive belts, spark plugs, timing belt, water pump, piston rings and every seal on the engine! All competed by Toyota mechanic with 26 years of experience. Transmission has never given me any problems, Vehicle has clean title and ready to sell today.


Email - Hello, the engine was rebuilt because the head gasket had blown out and I figured I'd rebuild the bottom end as this was a vehicle I was going to keep for the life of the truck, there is no rusted frame on the vehicle, no leaks, it has a new radiator along with all the other items listed in the ad, I also recently replaced a throttle position switch since the check engine light came on. The mileage is at just a few hundred miles below 275k miles. I'll send pictures following this message...Oh yeah the engine was rebuilt a little less than 7000 miles ago...

The pictures show a very clean truck. No dents or scratches. Sunroof, 4wd. The ad started several months ago at 5k. Seller is now down to 3k. I have no interest in modifying or putting alot of money into a 4runner. I really am looking a 4runner to haul the dogs around in, so looks aren't really that important.

With the above info, is this 4runner one I should look further into or should I run away fast?

What type of questions should I be asking the seller & what answer should I expect?

I really wish I had someone to help me out, but at the present time I don't. Thank you for any advice & help you can give me.

Chowbus, it sounds like the 4Runner was religiously maintained and by a competent person.

I would ask if the lower ball joints have been replaced. They have been known to fail without any warning leading to a wreck or rollover. Very important you figure that out.

At $3K, that's a solid deal for the amount of work that has been done. I would run your own carfax to make sure it hasn't been in any serious accidents before moving further.

If you haven't looked at it yet, ask for pics of the frame. Even though, he said there's no rust, I would still make sure of that.

Happened once where a delusional seller of a 4Runner told me there wasn't any rust, and when I went out to see it and peaked underneath, it had rust everywhere.

My only concern is the fact that it has been for sale for several months. These usually sell fairly quick at $5K, especially with that amount of overhaul work completed.

What do you mean supply is low in Ontario?
There are SO many 3rd gen autos for sale in Ontario for so cheap. Like unparalleled.
The manuals are hard to come by but there are so many autos. And they are cheaper in Ontario than anywhere in North America.

My '97 had 260k miles on it when I sold it, and I sold it for $6,400. It was really clean, 100% rust free, maintained well, many '99+ upgrades, lots of new suspension bushings, etc. Clean title.
That said, the paint was showing its age, and the hood and roof had been resprayed at a less-than-awesome shop. It looked good, but was peeling in some spots- like where they just taped off the rear quarter glass.
There is vIrtually ZERO decent 4Runners in AK. The buyer of my '97 actually flew down to OR, and drove it 2,500 miles home.
I think it was a fair deal for both of us.
Like I always say- things are worth whatever someone is willing to pay for them at the time. You can't base value on what a book- or computer- says.

What does it mean that the "bottom end" was rebuilt? Is this not a complete rebuild? Is this a typical solution for a blown head gasket? Should I have concern for the transmission at this mileage. Seller only states that the transmission has never given him any problem.

I am going to call the seller tomorrow as I have just received his number. I have been watching cl & the paper for months & find that some sellers way overprice their vehicles. And sometimes it follows that other sellers will overprice also. Until they find out that nobody is going to pay those ridiculous prices. Then everybody will lower the price. I've watched the same sellers go high, low, high in price.

4runners in this area are somewhat plentiful, but they seem to be price based on emotional attachment instead of real world value. The ads read good with a somewhat decent price until you contact the seller & they drop the ball about everything that needs to be done to them. And almost all of the 3rd gens are well above 175k miles.
