Here it is in detail for those who can't be bothered searching...
TSB EL002-03 has these instructions:
1. Turn ignition switch to "ON" position
2. Set odometer/trip display to "ODO" mode
3. Turn ignition switch to "OFF" position
4. Depress and hold the Trip Meter "RESET" button while turning the ignition switch to the "ON" position
5. The service maintenance reminder light will:
i. Illuminate solidly for 3 seconds
ii. Blink for 2 seconds
iii. Illuminate solidly for 1 second
iv. Turn off
6. Release the Trip Meter "RESET" button
7. Turn the ignition switch to the "OFF" position
8. Turn the ignition to the "ON" position and confirm that the service maintenance reminder light goes out.
Sooooooooo....is it different on later model 4th gens than on early models? I would have thought not.

So I'm searching this topic because my wife calls me and tells me the maintenance light is on.
I just changed the oil....but is the maintenance light the same as the check engine light??
Does the maintenance light come on at certain intervals to remind you to do some work?
I'm new to 4Runners but not to Toyotas...I have a 1999 lifted Tacoma with 176k miles on the original....umm everything, and no lights come on like this.

Yes - to remind you to change the oil. It's documented in the owners manual -- offhand, I don't remember the mileage that triggers it, but think it's around 5,000 miles and 7,500 miles. The function has two stages -- the MAINT light stays on a bit longer at startup initially (5,000 miles), then it stays on constantly at a higher mileage (7,500 miles).
Double-check the miles to make sure I have them right.

no wonder mine's starting to flash longer on start ups. I know how to reset it just in case the dealer doesnt do it. Weird, i don't remember mine being solid after 5000 of no oil change yet on the GX, cuz i've gone over 5k, a little over, and the light just flashes longer and longer as the miles progress w/o servicing it.

doubt it. It's almost like that one guy in the other forum I moderate in that was asking how to disable the flashing seatbelt warning light because he doesn't wear his seatbelt. It's not really a safety issue, but in the long run when the car gets older and older, we might appreciate that light when we find out possible problems before they get worse.
