You may think you're getting a better value but those 4th gens are just as rusty on the frames. Around here, getting a clean 4th gen is about 9-10k for a clean one. 6-7k for one with some rust on the frame.

Same for third gens around here :doh:
The nice third gens at dealers are usually 9-11k. Private party 7-10k.

Oh man, that looks deplorable.... and I'm from Michigan and have seen a lot of nasty shit.

My truck came from PA/NJ and it looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor compared to that.

Dealers are gonna be way expensive. The 3rd gen I bought has a couple of rust spots but they are on the body and the frame looks pretty good. It took me almost a year to find one that I was comfortable paying the price for. I paid 3400 but the paint isn't in the best shape. I would call it a 5 footer. Its got alot of scratches and what not. The rust spots that it does have haven't broken thru the paint yet. I can deal with that better than frame rot.

We have state inspection and that would not pass. It looks like the rear dif has a pin hole. The fluid is not leaking from the fill hole. There's more wrong than just rust on the chassis.

I got rid of a Tacoma that had a pretty good looking frame, 100 times better than that but the mounts for the leaf springs were getting ready to break off. 1st gen Tacomas rust from the inside out. I'm glad you didn't buy this one.

I called the guy up and told him I am going to pass. I appreciate you weighing in. I just HATE that such a low mileage runner is trashed due to rust. 60k miles! it was owned by a little old lady he chose to drive her Lexus verus the runner the majority of the time.

Obviously it wasn't garage kept or washed during the winter. With only 60,000 miles I bet it was parked or grass or gravel. The moisture from the ground killed it.

I have been searching for less than 150k miles. There have been some nice ones floating around at 180-200k miles. I think I am going to increase my mileage and just realize there will be more wore out components to replace. Since the low mileage runners have such a premium, it may be cheaper to do that anyway.

Agreed, and as long as it was remotely taken care of as far as washing underneath after winter and what not then you will see a big difference. You don't want to "settle" when it comes to that. GL with your search, good deals are out there...just be patient and stretch your search area for the right one

Yeah that is a no go. It makes me feel 1000x times better about my frame though!
