Retractable Running Boards

I just bought a 2013 Limited with the intention of adding the automatic running boards immediately after the purchase. I worked with 2 salesmen and they both told me I would be able to do this. Now I'm stuck with a vehicle that I can't add the option I want! This is total BS!

I think what people are seeing is that these running boards are often not what is within a sales regions "preference" for options packages. You *can* get these ordered on a car, the dealer just has to know how to do it. I waited 2 months for my car because I wanted the Limited, fully loaded, with those boards. I made my order and the factory made it, shipped it, then I took delivery.. Worth the wait IMO.

I wish there was a solution for the mud guards, that's the only thing that annoys me.. Since I don't do off-roading on this unit it doesn't burn me up or anything, but even in the rain the rooster tails are annoying to see...

If anyone has solved that problem, please post some pictures..

Parker (I think) did a write up. I moved the boards and put mudguards on. Pretty simple mod.

I want to add these as well. My grandmother can't get into my wifes 4runner. These would be great.

I got a pair of AMP boards for my Tacoma and tried to see if they would work for the 4runner. The frame is different and the location of the brake lines makes it impractical. I spoke to some guys at AMP on the phone a couple of times. They made it clear that there were no plans to design these for the 4runner. These things are quite vehicle specific and the 4runner is a low volume truck. Doesn't make financial sense for them.

The wiring is easy though. The AMP ones don't have an on-off switch. They just work with the door. I added a switch to my set up, but even that wasn't too difficult.

I wish they'd make this an add on...

Hmm. Bummers. Confirms what I heard. I asked 4 wheel parts if the Tacoma powersteps could be modded to a 4runner and the manager said probably can but with a whole hell of a lot of cutting and welding. Said they would sell it to me but with no warranty and they highly discourage me from trying. Said that next time they have a Tacoma set in the shop I could come by and look at it. I did not bother.

Went to the dealer and that was an even bigger fail. Not sold as an accessory. Only sold ala carte as parts and would come out to something like $4500+ and would need to be modded to fit on a TE.

This is not true. The auto-running boards are a factory only option.

You are correct. It is a factory option but you can also piece it together as replacement parts.

But you would not have the correct wire harness, hence why they are not port or dealer options.

So I have to take my truck in to the dealership because of my retractable running board on my driver side is making a horrible noise when it retracts under the truck. Thank goodness for the platinum warranty and still being covered at 60000 miles. Anyone else had this happen?

Want to buy my running boards?

I have a 2012 Limited and am finally getting my Shrockworks sliders in a few weeks. If you want to buy my power boards I am happy to sell. Will include the boards, all attachment parts, motors and wiring as practical to remove. these are the factory power running boards, were on the Limited when I bought it. Boards are in great shape, never dinged. I am just getting rid of them because I have the off-road bug (very common among Forum readers) and am putting sliders on. Price is $750.

I might be interested in the running boards. I have a 2014 Limited. Can you let me know what parts you are removing. I think there might be more to it then just the boards, including the internal switch, and possibly even a different wiring harness. I am just not sure if this is possible (at least an easy swap between vehicles))
