Retread Tires

Hey,

I have found some great deals on some retreaded tires and have been doing researching regarding this exact topic, getting some mixed reviews in my searching some people say they're just as safe while others are saying they wouldnt touch them..

So what I'm after is first hand experience.. Has anyone run Re-tread Tires or know anyone that has?

Not necessarily, but if they're pretty much the same thing (which seems to be the case from some reviews) then half price of the original product is definitely worth it

You know, I can totally understand the half price thing, I really can.. I love deals, just as much as the next human being.. Especially if you won't do any rock crawling/4wheeling/off-roading? then I guess a highway queen of a 4runner may be just what the wallet ordered.

Then again, I have zero experience with retreads...

Tire manufacturers don't recommend running a tire much past 7-8 years even with good tread and considering a retread's casing could very well be near that age even with new tread I'm not sure how much stock I would put into a set much past a couple of year's use.
I'm sure they are ok for the price but I'd rather have new.

I have also seen mixed reviews on retreads. At the time I was going to purchase tires I was going with the Treadwright Wardens which look just like the BFG AT KO's. A friend of mine has them on his FJC and swears by them. They have balanced great and he hasn't had any problems out of them. I personally would rather spend the extra money and go with new but that is just me. If I was using some just mainly for rock crawling or off road adventures then I would try those but not for everyday driving. I see mixed reviews on just about every forum.

My understanding is that they are good enough for commercial work, but you need to find a good source for them. Plenty of bad retreads out there.

But as was pointed out the tire does actually have a lifespan and retreading doesn't reset that life span. Personally I'd buy new tires for the piece of mind and to remove any doubt, but that's just me.

Treadwright.com has a good rep. I had some on an old Samurai and never had an issue but it was a light weight truck.

I ran treadwrights for a few seasons back in college, the cheap price is what suckered me in. They were BFG allterrain carcasses with mud terrain grip. Made a lot of people do double takes. Haha. Sold them after 20k miles on them for some larger tires, they were about 1/2 worn. They were on my daily driver 92 Pickup (the one in my avatar) and saw everything from snow to rocks to highway. No complaints here.

Treadwright has a good rep. But those I have known with them either love them or get frustrated (hated them) with the balancing process. Luckily treadwright is pretty good about replacing bad tires.
