Revenge of the Dunes and Colorado Mountains

More fun in the sun. First stop in Whitewash Sand Dunes, that place is a giant playground. The sand was very soft, finer than most beach sand, almost like dust. I tried going up a few steep dunesides, but could only make it up about 10-15ft (aired down to 20psi). Had no problems on slight slopes. Then attempted Klondike Bluffs before scraping and realizing I had to reverse through that slot because there wasn't enough room to turn around. Then the last lower part of Lockhart Basin, with a shallow creek crossing.

Second stage was Silverton, CO area. Breathtaking for sure. Stony Pass and almost to Kite Lake, but the river was a little high and fast. Used 4Lo almost exclusively, it climbs 2 or 3k feet in a couple miles. Then back to the Alpine Loop all the way through Engineer's Pass, which I scraped a few times on. I made it to the summit of Ophir Pass, but the west side was still snowed in.

In another month, all the CO trails should be about cleared up from snow. I highly recommend the trails around Silverton. There are some that don't require any greater than stock clearance but are still pretty thrilling and offer incredible views. I used traildamage.com as a resource, it is very good for the Utah and CO areas.

Look like a great time - I am going to the Silverton area in the middle of August to drive some of the trails and do some camping and rafting - can't wait!

Great pix....

You people need to let us Colorado folk know when your coming out, we can hit a few trails with ya :lookout:

Okay, there's a little bit of irony to having a Trail Edition 4runner and being parked next to a sign in the middle of the boonies that says "Off road driving prohibited".

That is kinda funny... though if you did go off-roading there and didn't know exactly what you were doing or if you couldn't levitate your ride, you'd be rolling down a VERY steep hill... not so fun.
