The OP thinks that running the pump low will cause it damage. This can be true, as with temp change and pump not submerged the rubber cause start to crack and wear out. But most dont relize when you run you tank empty there is still a few gallons of gas keeping it mostly submerged. Only when running completely out where motor dies would it not be in most cases. Lots of tanks have baffles also to keep it submerged. I have ran all my vehicles pretty low and let them sit. Never had issues with failing pumps. Only if it was a non oem or cheap replacement.

my roomate refuses to get AAA so every time his car breaks down, its a 97 nissan maxima, i have to go help him, hes had the battery die because the brake switch broke and left the lights on. at the time he was working at the same company as his dad, neither he nor his dad new how to change the battery, they didnt even know how to jump the car. Then the maf failed and the engine died as he was driving down the street, he claimed the steering wheel and brakes locked, which i know they didnt, he just doesnt understand that you have to push harder. then after a few months one of the fuel injectors got clogged, so we had to use my AAA to tow it back to our house, and then his parents donated it for a tax refund. Now he somehow got his sisters car, an 04 maxima. within two days of getting it, the radiator failed. So his parents had me put a new one in. he also gave me a sheet listing out all the issues it had over 30k ago, oil change, timing chain slap, broken cv boots, and a bunch of other things. i asked him when he was going to take care of those, and he said he wasnt since it was an old car. and he still refuses to get AAA.
previous to having the maxima his parents had bought him some sort of suzuki sedan, on the first day of driving it the brakes failed, they probably didnt completely but who knows. he was coming off the freeway, and there was a car pulled to the left with no lights on, but it was stopped. when he put his foot on the brake, the car didnt slow down. so instead of using the emergency brake he just put it in neutral and slammed into the other car. he then tried to blame the other driver for not having his lights on.
Anyways the point is, some people just arent meant to drive cars, and it doesnt matter how many times you try to curb their ways, they will just keep making the same deciscions.
as a side note, he always joked that we would turn his 97 maxima into a canoe, one day ill find it, and do it.

Personally I don't see the harm in this. He's asked nicely and she refuses to comply. She'll never know what he did, and if it gets her to modify her behavior then more power to him. The only reason I gas up my wife's car is because there's always some bum aggressively panhandling and I don't want her to be subjected to this crap. :nono:

Its not they cant do it. It just makes them feel good when they can act like a little girl and have there man take care of them. After I relized that, me and wife have been a lot happier. LOL.

I'll make it known, when my girlfriend mistreats her 4Runner, I also pull the EFI fuse to scare her into caring for it.
The last time I did it was because she hit a pole with the front bumper. Told her it messed up some electrical shit.
