According to the manual, should not be possible to put the reverse or park accidentally while driving.

In my past SUV was impossible to move in the Reverse while driving.

Someone tried to check this security?

another question: the seats of the 4runner are really hard and narrow compared to others SUV, is this a choise of Toyota? or maibe Asian people have different taste of confort :) and small butt....

thanks and have a nice day.

Yeah it works... You can throw it in reverse while you are on the highway and it freaks tailgaters off your butt... Lights come on, but transmission will NOT engage.

 are you serious?

its true

Not that I have tested this, but as long as your foot is off the brake and you shift into reverse from any forward gear, the tranny will not engage. This is the new standard format. It used to physically lock out the reverse gear from the selector when you were moving forward. Now with electronic shifting, it just prohibits the tranny from engaging.

As far as narrow seats... I think they are pretty much standard across most mid-size SUV's. Ford Exploders are about the same. Full-size SUVs come with those nice wide bottom seats for us Americans...

Tranny...

jO,
When you do this does the tranny go into "neutral" or does the forward gear stay active? Are you able to hold your speed or do you start to coast down?

I'll write to Toyota to confirm before try.
I'm scared one time in my cherokee my nephew with his foot from back seat put the gear in neutral just for a joke......

For the confort, the Jeep's seat was more confortable in the long trip, more soft for my pointy butt (I'm 145 pounds.....)
Made my first medium trip (200Km) and at destination my butt and back hurts.

Also I did the same trip with an X5 and an Domestic Van without notice any hurt.

Probably is like orthopedic bed, need time to use.....

:)

Ps I'm italian and fortunately my butts is really small.....

ps I don't know any other polite name for butt, and my english isn't that great, so consider this writing style as Polite!!!!

ps great Forum and very polite people, I like this!

It is the same as neutral.. Just doesnt engage reverse. You slowly start to slow down... I have only tried it on the highway, (don't ask me why I tried it) but I have... Ill do it tonight and give you all the results.

Looks like a joke but isn't! this can be a security problem if doesn't work since everyone can have some child jocking around or maibe some girlfriend playing with you :) this is a good one :)

Let us know the results.

and.....what about if you are bracking and in the same time the shift goes into the Parking???? probably the Parking isn't protected if we are bracking.

thanks friends

Mileage now is 5.6Km/l (City 75% Highway 25%), I'll let you know after the full tank the 400km Highway mileage.

I've just tried both. It does nothing.. it puts the car into neutral.. In reverse the lights come on.. I did it again tonight...

Thanks again, so what did you feel when try to move to parking, just nothing or is locked like you can't push?

thanks

One day I was kind of freaked out when I was moving forward and then shifted the gear into Reverse without stopping first...nothing happened. It acted as if it was still in neutral.

Why don't you just NOT put it in reverse or park while driving down the highway? I just leave it in forward gears while travelling in a forward direction......seems to work pretty good.

bringing up an old thread. accidentally did this yesterday in a parking lot. i went from 1st all the way to reverse at about 5 mph and it did nothing, i think the backup camera even turned on(was freaking out to much about putting it in reverse to really look)
