Reverse Transmission Problem

Was on vacation with the family in Big Bear, CA over the weekend. My 96 4Runner SR5 4WD w/250K miles did not want to engage in either drive or reverse first thing this morning.

Live in Vegas where the weather is much warmer than in Big Bear (very cold this morning) and at times, the trans does not engage but eventually does after a few seconds.

Although it took a few minutes this morning, the trans finally engaged but only in drive and never into reverse. Stopped by a NAPA store and picked up some "transmission fix" but that didn't do the trick.

Packed up the family and came back home a day early...didn't want to chance the trans completely giving out on us tomorrow morning.

Checked trans level before dumping trans fix and levels were okay. On the way home, the trans at times smelled hot when shifting into lower gears when climbing higher highway terrain. Lastly, trans was flushed about a year ago.

Thankfully, made it home safe this evening.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
