Review of several Portland, OR area dealers...

When looking for my recently purchased Limited I visited several dealers. Some were good. Some were not. This may help in case any of you in the Portland area are looking.

Beaverton Toyota: Not responsive and simply would not deal. At all. I went there to look at some cars. When I started talking about getting what we wanted and price. He told me once I knew what I wanted he would hand me off to the finance guy. I asked if he was the guy who negotiated. He looked at me and said "we don't really do that." I work for a large company that has a corporate discount service. (Edit for clarity: the corporate program has pre-negotiated auto prices with specific dealers. They pointed me to Beaverton Toyota.) So I went that route to see what they would do on the pre-negotiated price. It was ~$300 below MSRP - I'd already gotten quoted prices much better than that from other dealers. Once I get that price I asked if there was any room to move. They said no. When I decided to get a 2015 since there were no 2014s in the area with the color/options we wanted, I called to see if they'd do the same deal. No response to my calls. Multiple calls to the person who gave me the $300 below MSRP price. No return calls. I honestly don't know how they stay in business. EDIT: These guys also played up that they give 2 years or 25K miles free service. When I asked if that was just them or all Toyota dealers they said "It's just us. You have to come here to get the free service."

Broadway Toyota: Never got to the point of negotiating. Went there two times. Both times they had no idea what 4Runners were on the lot. They were clueless about model differences, features, and options. And even more crazy to me, they literally could not find them on the lot. "I think they moved them last night - they're over here." (After walking across the lot. "No, they must be over here." We never found any 4Runners on their lot. I can't say how they would have been to deal with. Pretty frustrating to visit. Also one of those places where they're lined up like vultures when you drive up. When you sell cars you gotta know where they are on the lot.

Ron Tonkin Toyota: I'd heard nothing but bad stories about Ron Tonkin. However the sales guy we worked with was great. He knew exactly what they had in stock. He knew models and features. He told us what we likely wanted, and he was right. He did a couple of test drives and wasn't pushy at all. I really wanted to buy a car from this guy. We just couldn't get to a price. They would not get anywhere near invoice for a 2014 when the 2015s were already starting to come in. Not a big issue, I just couldn't pay that. They also had a demo Limited that was loaded - $49K MSRP car they were selling for $42K. Great deal - just not the car we wanted. Except for the price I liked everything about this experience. Still feel badly that guy didn't get a sale from us.

Gresham Toyota: This was a really interesting place. Another awesome salesman. Came up, asked a few questions, told us what we likely wanted, and was absolutely correct. Also saw our Rover and asked why we weren't at the Rover dealer rather than there. We talked a little and it was pretty clear they weren't going to move much on price. I said "Why would I pay close to MSRP for a 2014 when 2015s are already coming in?" He replied "When you're right, you're right." Another guy I would have been happy to buy from. He gave us a lot of info and is actually not a fan of 4Runners. Appreciated his directness and honesty.

Toyota of Gladstone: By this time I was tired of nobody negotiating and decided to try the Costco program. After submitting a Costco request online they contact us immediately. We told him what we wanted. Said they had the car we wanted in stock (black Limited) and another one in blue. We walked around the lot and could not find a black Limited. There was a blue one, but not with the options we wanted. (So now we're already irritated.) When we sat down the guy started going over the process, talked about features, and finally asked me to fill out some paperwork. They wanted my DL, SSN, and a credit check authorization. I told him I didn't need financing. He said "this is our process." I said "I just want to see the Costco price" and said nothing else. After starting at me for a few seconds he got up and left. The sales manager came over to help us. I told him the same thing: "please quit wasting my time and give me the price." He showed me a number and I have to admit I don't recall what it was. But I was not impressed. I threw out a counter offer just to see where he was and he refused. He said "Look, I'm going to sell this car in the next 3 days for near MSRP. I don't have any reason to discount it." I'll give him big credit for being direct and honest. I give these guys no credit for anything else.

Vancouver Toyota: Note that this is Vancouver, WA, not Canada. At this point I'm completely fed up with Portland dealers and I asked Costco to send me another referral. Went to these guys, talked for about 5 mins, and she shows us the Costco price: $100 below invoice. I honestly thought I could do better for a 2014, but they didn't have the color/features the wife wanted and they couldn't find one that was close enough. We agreed to buy a 2015 for $300 over invoice (Costco pricing for 2015s wasn't in yet.) Could we have done better if I kept looking? Maybe, but I doubt I could have beaten that by much. When they got the 2015 Costco pricing and saw it was lower, they gave us that price ($150 over invoice). This was very straightforward and no BS. The car we wanted was still on a boat. They gave us estimated arrival time and said it would be a week or two later. It came in one day later than they estimated, which was surprising good. This was a very good car buying experience.

I really don't know what to say about the Portland dealers. Demand drive prices and they're selling cars. So everybody else must be paying close to MSRP for their 4Runners around here. I have no idea why that would be.

I used to live in that area. I had a good experience when I bought my 04 Tacoma from Vancouver Toyota. I had the same lousy experience with a few area dealers, mainly Beaverton. I wanted fair trade for my car at the time and Vancouver was the only one that would deal.

That's very interesting, thanks for taking the time and informing others. All I can say is from a service and parts department stand point beaverton toyota is horriable, absolutely devious crooks!! I will never even step foot on there property and gladly drive down to wilsonville Toyota who by the way is better in both those departments and when the time comes for a new toyota will have my business hands down.

Beaverton toyota will talk some serious trash about other dealerships and even go as far as saying they are selling me non oem parts or used and refurbished parts!.....??? Come on man! That is wrong in every sense. I feel sorry for those that take their business there for they are being lied to and taken for a ride.

If anybody would like the name of an absolute GREAT service writer down in wilsonville please just PM me and I will give you the name. I lucked out in getting him on a phone call I made and will never deal with anyone else..? Even when all I want are some parts he will take my list and deal with it all even though it's not his department.

My two cents in regards to service in the PDX area:

Broadway-Shady. Repeat. SHADY. I went in to have my transmission flushed (they told me on the phone for $170 they'd flush my 2003 with Type IV fluid). They said they only do a drain and refill, so I said no thanks but left the car for a recall. They call me later to tell me my left headlight is out, I need spark plugs and my battery is bad. First off, I had my battery checked at Firestone the week before when I got new tires on, and it checked out perfectly. He quoted me $60 for a headlight, $370 for plugs and $170 for a battery. LOL no thanks.

Here is the best part. I get the car back, pop the hood and the headlight was loose. Popped it back in and I was good to go. Funny how it had no issues prior to my visit. Even better, I had just put in new sparks plugs 3 weeks ago.

I told the guy not to touch anything else on my car. When I picked it up the service recommendation sheet mysteriously left off all of the recommended services. I will not be back. The sad thing is I took both of my other vehicles (2013 Tundra and 2012 4runner) on plenty of occasions. They will not be back.

Beaverton Toyota-Have not been there, but their prices seem to be slightly to much higher than the other dealers.

Vancouver-Again, have not been there, but I spoke with a service adviser on the phone and she was very knowledgeable, and followed up with an email with a service sheet of services and pricing, and their pricing was reasonable for a stealership. For any future services I don't do myself, I will be using them.

I have heard Wilsonville has a pretty good dealer. I have been there once for some service work and will go back again. Quick turn around time and didn't try and sell me things I did not need. x2 for the Wilsonville dealer!

You're experiences mirror mine. I actually drove up to Bellevue Toyota to buy mine a couple weeks ago! They had hands down the best price and they were AWESOME to deal with. All pricing was done via email. I showed up with a check and they had me OUT THE DOOR in 30 minutes. Never once tried to upsale me, offer me warrranty or crap. Best experience i had. Truck only had 1 mile on it too!

So, who has the best service department of these dealers in the Portland area?

Same here, Portland are dealers are just crooks. They think just because you want a 4Runner, they will do you a favor and they try to sell it close by MSRP.
Also, they low ball you on the trade, I've got a better offer on my trade from Lexus of Portland than Beaverton Toyota, but I've sold it privatly and got $2000 more.

Somebody said they went to Bellevue Toyota, that's a good dealer, I've bought my first Toyota from them and love the experince, I'll go back there for my next car.

I think, Portland area dealers, they deal every day only with people who don't try/like to negotiate. They looked at me like I'm from another planet when I've asked a price close (not bellow) to invoice.

Also, if you go for a 'free oil change' they treat you like crap.
Worst experience ever with those dealers.

Left out the most shady of them all. Royal Moore in Hillsboro. I think it could be located in the middle of the dump a few miles away and no one could tell the difference.

Yes, the shady Royal Moore. When I moved to Portland from Bellevue, I've got an offer for an oil change 'only $6' for my Corolla. The car was 3 years old and only 25,000 mile. Went there, they said it's only '$6' for the basic oil change. After 30 min, they come to me with a long list of 'things' need to be replaced today....the total amount $980. I've said no and didn't really paid attention on that list, but I've saw one of the items...brakes front/rear....went back after 5000 miles to Beaverton and everything was fine. When I've sold the car had 60,000 miles and still the original brakes.

Never went back to Royal Moore, even right now I live less than a mile away from Royal Moore.

I've tried to get a deal over the phone/e-mail from Wilsonville Toyota, but looks the same like other crooks. The best deal was $1500 off MSRP and they said that is the final price. I've got $3000 off from Toyota of Salem, over the phone, but was too far away and Beaverton matched.

Right now, the same here, I'm looking for a honest service shop, still looking.

I take my 4runner to an independent toyota shop called "integrity auto". They seem reasonable.

Vancouver Toyota repaired my 4runner years ago but I noticed, after searching the internet, that they charged me much more than MSRP for parts. I complained so they cut me a check for a little more than hundred dollars.

Amazing info, man, thanks for sharing! Found this site when I was searching for Toyota dealership reviews - All about Toyota cars - I love Toyota models. Car reviews. Never got the chance to fully check it out myself, but seems decent enough.

pretty much my experience... i have dealt with ron tonkin one time and that was 2 times too many! i never bought a part from them, and wont. i went in there and asked for a price on a fuel pump relay (also the same relay that powers the EFI, as well as tail/brake lights) anyhow i had already talked to the parts department at Vancouver Toyota -whom i almost exclusively deal with -the parts guys there know their stuff backwards and forwards btw, and Vancouver quoted me $18.xx for the part. when i walked into ron tonkin and asked for the same relay they wanted $86.xx for it and i about chit myself... i asked him to look up the part by number and again same thing. then i confronted them with this price and they kinda balked and humed n hawed... they told me that there was no way that could be true as his price for purchase was like $6x.xx... i told them they were a joke and walked out. i went up to Vancouver and bought it from them and then went back to RT and asked them to bring the relay out. when they did i laid mine on the counter with the invoice from Vancouver and confronted them. they told me i was a liar and that was not a new relay or that was not a real invoice.

anyhow i have had service done at several local Toyota dealers as well as Lexus of Portland and Vancouver Toyota once again is by far on top of their game. not only did they not over charge, but they performed several items of maintenance or repair for free and without hesitation -they gave me a free alignment, free car washes(even when im just coming in to pick up a part), and free bulb replacements for a turn signal and tail light. they have also gone out of their way to make sure i knew about things that needed or could be addressed even though it would not make them money -broken dash in my lexus. Lexus of Portland is also a quality shop, and this surprised me very much, but their parts dept on the other hand is seriously lacking in people and knowledge.

Sadly my wilsonville contact has retired, I still will give them a chance and if they let me down it will be off to Vancouver. Even if by some miracle the local dealers have the same price on either parts or service, I've learned my lesson the hard way and will gladly go out of my way to drive past all those dealers on my way to Vancouver.

Awesome resource

This is a terrific resource. As i am now navigating the hipster PDX Toyota scene, I can echo most of everything that's been described. I am looking for a new 2015 LE, possibly TEP with KDSS. I too have experienced an unbelievable lack of service, professionalism, willingness to negotiate, etc. :barf:

I guess I'm purchasing elsewhere. Heck, the SE USA has pricing that is 3-6K cheaper than here. Covered shipping is about 2200 from Charleston SC.... = net profit.
Hmmm

Anyone else purchase their cars elsewhere?

Ron Tonkin: Made appt with Mizan. He passed me off to another sales guy 1hr before we were set to meet. Not only was the promised vehicles not there but they had no TEPs in stock. DanielT took me for a test drive and there was no add'l pressure. I would consider doing business with DanielT but they don't have what I want in stock.

Gladstone: Told me how I just missed out on paying nearly msrp prices for 2015 TEP w/ 37k miles. Regardless the deal, I will not buy from here.

Gresham: Desi - Straight shooter but their prices were a bit high.

I will likely look into Vancouver and Bellevue as options.

I was just down at Wilsonville Toyota yesterday because I was looking for an OEM key/alarm fob for my new to me 2000 4runner Limited, and they were the only ones that had one in stock that would work. Or so the service writer said anyways. I got there a couple minutes early to my appointment but the lane was open so I pulled in. I spoke to them on the phone and gave all my info and what I wanted, and was assured it was in stock and they were set up to do the programming on the remote fob. For some reason though the service writer says "It's gonna take awhile for them to cut the new one".... What? For some reason they thought I wanted a new key and fob. I said it was just the fob and he corrected the paperwork. No biggie all was well. I gave the service writer my keys and went into the lounge. After a few minutes I decided to go walk the lot and check out what they had. I was wearing a sweat shirt and shorts, I hadn't planned on being in public and looked like it, let alone buy a new car. I found some cool stuff, took some pics and sent em to some buddies, and headed back in.

I was intercepted by the sales manager and greeted professionally and we spoke for a minute. I told him my 4runner was in service and that I wasn't here to buy. But I liked the FJ that was outside. It was built up a little, ARB bumper, winch, Hella light bar and a few lights, suspension/tires. TRD decals :pimp: He asked if I wanted to drive it, I said sure and he introduced me to a salesman. We're talking, and he mentions that since my 4runner is here I could always just trade it in and he'd be more than happy to go check out what trade in value was. As the salesman and I are walking out to the truck I flat told him I wasn't there to buy but I liked the FJ and he offered to drive it, if the trade in value is there I'll think about it. So I go drive, and its a sweet rig, I didn't get to use the locker or winch though, it was just a quick lap around town and on the freeway. When we get back I thank the salesman and the manager happens by, I asked if he looked up trade in and he hadn't, too busy, but he'd do it now and it'll take a few minutes. No problem, I'm in no rush. I go back to the lounge and chill, they've got the People's Court with Judge Milian on. :biggrin1: A few minutes later he comes out and we talk, he says there's a lot of miles on it and it needs a lot of work, he could do $500. I must have had "STUPID" on my forehead or something. I kindly refrained from telling him to **** off, and chuckled and said "NOPE. No deal" and that was that. He asked if I wanted to see what payments would be and maybe I could sell it privately for a down payment. I said no and I wasn't going to buy. We shook hands and he walked away.

They had incorrectly told me the fob would work and it wouldn't program, so I didn't even get that right. I've since ordered one on ebay and I'm more than sure I can make it work. So all in all I wasted an hour of my time, only to be insulted on the value of my rig, and didn't get anything other than a test drive out of it. Big whoop I've driven Ferraris and race cars. I really don't care about an FJ. Oh well. Probably won't go back there.

Sounds like a good time for a one way plane ticket and a few day vacation to drive it home and see the country.

So i would never buy from or recommend Beaverton (Russ) Toyota to anyone again. 10 years ago when i bought my 2005 Tacoma TRD Double Cab I traded in a 2004 Hyundai Elantra. The Elantra has some slight body damage. Went through the usual haggling. They made an offer for the trade in. I signed the paper work for 4 years of payments, they signed paper work.
Paperwork otherwise known as a contract. 2-3 weeks later I got a call asking me to come down to discuss my trade in. I said Huh? Went down there and met with a general manager. They informed me that I owed them another $4k down due to the condition of my trade in. I said "WTF?!?"
Apparently a contract signed by a representative of Beaverton Toyota was meaningless. I raised my voice, not cussing, but made it known I was not happy. They asked me to calm down. Sorry but i was pissed. I put all the cash down I had. $4k after the fact? What kind of BS was that.

Needless to say I did not end up paying the additional $4k. But after that experience about the only way I could in could conscious buy a vehicle or parts from them the car/truck would have to be free.
