OME vs TRD/Tundra/LC Review

Hello Rickashay,

Thank you for writing up this review. Im new to the 4runner world and I found it very informative and it answered many questions I had regarding lifts. I do have a question. Would this set-up be possible on a 2001 2WD SR5 ? What concerns or limitations would exist?

What type of lift would you recommend for 2WD 4Runner ? Im looking for clearence for bigger tires and for light trails during camping/outdoor trips. The rear load would just be combination of camping gear/yakima rack equipment for my cargo box bikes/kayaks/boards and occasional jet ski towing etc.

Any input or suggestions would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I assume there would b no issues with putting the TRD bilstein setup on a 2WD but I can't speak from experience. I just would guess that you don't need the diff drop! haha

question...

hi im about to order all my parts for this lift. Did you use the bushing for the shocks that the bilsteins came with? do they fit? (not talking about the .75" bushing i understand that im talking about all the other bushings) or would i need to use my stock bushings and/or buy a 4runner bushing kit as i think all mine are shot.

also are you running a rear sway bar? cause i took mine out without a lift im just thinking how it would be like with a lift this high... maybe a little scary? should i re-install my sway bar and put longer end links in?

Thanks!

I've been running the Tundra/LC coils on the 5100s for a while now and I love the on and offroad mannerisms. Rides awesome.

That said, I'm now needing to move some heavy weight, and while the truck/trans seems to pull it just fine, the rear is sagging quite a bit, and when the brakes are applied the front dives down as well.

Long story short; good for daily driving, offroading, and light hauling, but if you weight it down....good luck.

edit: I'm thinking of trying to stuff some airlift 1000's in the rear springs to help with the weight. Anybody have any experience with this?

Okay I am buying these parts for my lift however one question.

I don't really like the rake this provides, I love the front but would like the back to be even.

I'd like to know the best way to go about this.

LC 7 wraps, or OME 890s, or if anyone else has a suggestion please let me know, I am just looking for the truck to be even around 2.5 - 3 of lift.

Or what about the 8 wraps with no bumpstop like OP suggested removing to reduce the rake?

Thanks.

You still have rake with the rear bump stops removed. As is how I have mine.

Not sure what you can do the rear, but the Eibach 3" springs from Toytech will raise the front more.

Can you show me a picture of your rake without the bumpstop?

Thanks.

If I recall correctly, Addison removed his on the set-up pictured. I'm fairly sure it's documented on this post in the picture posting.

I don't have a readily available picture of my truck. There are tons on this forum though.

Tundra shocks/coils

2 questions on the tundra front setup.

1. I think I found the correct Tundra coil/bilstien assembly at a junk yard, but they said they do not see the part numbers. How can I verify they are the right ones? Is the Y/Y, Y/B marking enough?

2. Can these go right into the front of the 3rd gen if they are fully assembled, or do you have to use something from the stock setup?

Thanks

Y/y y/b is the right colors. Make sure the struts are bilstein. They will be yellow struts. You have to remove your top plates and put them in place of the tundra top plates as the tundra ones dont work. Just buy some new top plates. They are cheap and make the job go easier. Plus its a little extra insurance and thats never a bad thing.

So I picked up a set of coilovers w the y/y b/y markings on the springs, but the shock was a std black one. The coils appeared to be the progressive coils though. These are the right ones, no? Can't imagine that there would be separate coils with the same markings.

Thanks Rickashay and everyone else for supplying great info. I've read for hours trying to figure out a lift for my 99 4run. This seems like a good way to go for a comfortable ride, which I've learned through experience I like better than super stiff (tundra valved SAWs in my taco) Anyway my 99 4run suspension is shot and I need to get the right set up for what I'm using this truck for: driving on the highway, driving fast on f*cked up dirt and gravel roads in Costa Rica(washboard, potholes, etc.). Occasionally crawling through rutted out driveways, but overall not much crawling.

So my question is: Do you guys think the Tundra TRD springs in the front will be good for this? Or do you think an OME set up would be better?

If I go OME, I was prob going to do 881/890 with bilstein 5100. Although I've read some guys are putting 906s in the rear.

I've realized I can't do the LC springs in the rear as it will be too much lift. Really only looking for 1.5" or so in the front and maybe an inch higher in the rear as I will not try to get 33s" on this truck.

Which OME spring would be better?

I love my '98 with 285/75/16 but I need to keep this vehicle more economical as I may drive it through south america. (some off road but LOTS of highway)

I appreciate any input.

Sonoran Steel has the whole setup as a package. Otherwise you can piece it all together yourself for less, if you want to do the work.

Handleing/ride issues

I've been running TRD/5100's in the front and 906/5100's in the rear for the past few months on my 99 4Runner and I find I'm having problems with ride and handling. I've got a soft "wobbly" ride on the highway as if the is not enough dampening. I expected some issues because of the increased height but it still feels wrong to me, especially with so many people having a good experience with this set up.

I'm set on the lowest perch in the front and gained about 2" all around.

Sway bar bushings and Steering rack bushings are new

Stock Front bumper no winch

Stock tires, good alignment

100km/day daily driver, weekend warrior

Anyone have any ideas? I'm thinking of going to OME in the front

Thanks in advance!

hoathbill - What are the part numbers of the front coils & shocks that you used? New or used?

I haven't heard of anyone else with a similar issue. I am considering the same lift and would be interested to hear others chime in. You might want to start a new thread to ask the question.

Ditto here. I'm also considering this setup and would love to hear an answer to the wobbly handling you're getting. Sounds like something ain't right.
