I need some help! My 4Runner just passed the 175K mark and is still going strong... for the most part
. About 600 miles ago, an odd noise/vibration started coming from the front right CV-axle area. My dealer concluded the right CV needs replacing, but a second opinion wasn't so sure, since the noise isn't a typical broken-CV sound like clicking when turning. It is a mid-pitched vibration that starts just under 35mph and will continue to around 50 mph; it's always the same pitch and has nothing to do with engine or vehicle speed. It happens when I'm slowing down from above 50 and speeding up from below 35, or holding speed within that range. The closest description I can muster is (bear with me) the noise a seal makes, but held out for several seconds as if the seal were singing rather than "barking" in short bursts. You chuckle, but I promise that's really what it sounds like!
I had EBC Greenstuff pads put on (not my best decision) and resurfaced the rotors about 800 miles ago, so it could be something to do with the brakes. If I can figure out a way to record and post a quality sound clip, I'll do so. It's not affecting any mechanical functions, so I'm still driving the 4Runner every day; the noise is becoming more frequent, though. I am open to any suggestions as to what this bizarre noise might be. Bearings? CV? Something else? All ideas are welcome!
