right rear shock keeps breaking

Hello Everyone,

I just discoverd that my rear passanger side shock is broken again!

I replaced it about 3 years ago when the last shock was also broken, passanger side rear! ( I put on bilstein 4600)

What could be the reason my rear passanger side shock keeps breaking?

I haven't seen it this time, the dealer noted it when changing oil, but last time it broke at the top nut.

Any clues?

how bad are your springs? my guess, if they are on the bump stops i wonder if its hitting them causing stress the shock prematurely. bad sway bar links causing extra flex stress? (out there idea) either that or it wasn't installed right or not enough lock tight
 
I broke one of the Bilstein on the same wheel location while making a right turn over a speed bump at about 5 MPH. The stud on the top snapped right off at the weld. I then went with Gabriel shockabsorber.
 
Did you tighten the mounting bolts before you put tension on them? Just fyi all the suspension bolts on our trucks are supposed to be tightened with weight on. Install the shock and snug everything down, then torque it with the wheels on the ground. Use a torque wrench don't over stretch the bolts or bind the bushings.

My springs are not too bad. It is not sitting on the bump stop. it's a stock 98, and still rides at almost normal/original height, almost no sagging without load. (although, this time around when replacing the shocks, I am considering going with OME 906 and Bilstein 5100 in rear. with stock 98 in the front with bilstein 4600)

Dealer said front sway bar link is also broken. which I think is also a second one. Could they be causing failure of each other? ( I think they were also replaced around the same time before.)

I did tow my motorcycle(BMW R1200GS) recently on a long 900 mile trip in a Uhaul trailer. but that was well under the load capacity of the vehicle and the toyota tow hitch.

I did have the shocks installed by a shady mechanic, I was out of town and my options were limited, when my first rear shock broke. So, it is possible he may not have properly installed them. But the same passenger rear! :-(

"Leaf spring? Center pin?" I don't think my car has leaf springs, coil spring on all 4. What/where is center pin?

A broken sway link will not cause your shocks to fail, especially not a front, I removed my front sway bar completely a few years ago, do not miss it, and most of the serious folks around here remove or at least disconnect the rear bar when off road.

How about broken rear shock allowing too much stress to the chassis and breaking a weaken sway bar link in the front? plausible?

Anyway, I looked under the car and shock has broken off at the top where it bolts. Pretty mucht the same way as the last time.

I am planning on going with OME 906 with Bilstein 5100 in the back with stock 98 coils with 4600s in the front. Should I expect a rake? with front lower than rear? I am afraid, this will increase wind noise or drag (and drop MPG etc.)

Anyone seen or have this setup? would love to hear about the experience with this setup.

This car is driven mostly by my dad for on road use.
