Rim offset needed for wider stance?

I'm like a little bit of the wheel to stick out past the fender, I'm pretty sure it's not D.O.T. approved in FL, but I like the look and stance, not really looking for a wheel wider than 9 or 10, maybe a 16" rim, not sure what I should be looking for in an offset.

I'm trying to understand the offset/backspacing needed for a rim to stick out so I wouldn't need a spacer.

I am looking at doing the same to my 04 Limited. Not sure if I'm going to do spacers or new rims with an offset. I found a rim that had a -12 offset from the hub, but I'm not sure if that will get them out as far as I want.

Here's some info I found today.


The offset of a wheel is the distance from its hub mounting surface to the centerline of the wheel. The offset can be one of three types (measured in millimeters).*

Zero OffsetThe hub mounting surface is even with the centerline of the wheel.

Positive
The hub mounting surface is toward the front or wheel side of the wheel. Positive offset wheels are generally found on front wheel drive cars and newer rear drive cars.

Negative
The hub mounting surface is toward the back or brake side of the wheels centerline. "Deep dish" wheels are typically a negative offset.

If the offset of the wheel is not correct for the car, the handling can be adversely affected. When the width of the wheel changes, the offset also changes numerically. If the offset were to stay the same while you added width, the additional width would be split evenly between the inside and outside. For most cars, this won't work correctly. *Backspacing, similar to offset, is the distance from the hub mounting surface to the inside lip of the wheel (measured in inches).

Check out this comparison site, will give you an idea of what you have OEM compared to what you might be looking at.

FWIW, I have 17x8 rims w/ 4.5 inch Backspacing and 0 offset. 275/70 tires. The wheels are almost perfectly flush, maybe a tad past the fenders on my 2007 which has wider fenders than the 2005 and earlier models.

I love the stance of my truck w/ this setup, check my build thread and member pics to get an idea of what this size/setup wheel does for the runner.

My wheels are Pro Comp 7105s, Love the way they look and they improved the stance dramatically!

here is a pic with a 18x9 wheel with 12mm offset... the tire sticks out about 1/2 an inch or so...

con: truck looks good, the tires sit nicely, but I would like them out a bit more on mine, did you notice a difference in handling?

ed: the pics didn't load, but I can see your truck in your avatar, looks good, not tucked in or whimpy.

I have some reading up to do on the chart I guess.

I did the lift/wheels and tires all in the same weekend, Truck handles much nicer than it ever did before.

My wife has made quite a few comments on how much better my SR5 handles over her Limited. Much of that is from the lift, but the wider stance goes well with the higher truck.

Good luck w/ your choices, it's really hard to pick out what you want!

Someone on here, don't remember who, has the same specs of wheels I have with spidertrax and they stick way out. You might look at wheels and spacers like they did.
