Rims and Tires for Sport Ed - round 2

Seems like it was just yesterday when I was replacing my OEM rims with ProComp 7089 rims and BFG A/T 275/70 17 tires. The time has come to plan for my next rim and tire combo. My requirements have evolved, primarily due to chunks of metal missing from my ProComp rims.

Keeping in mind I can only buy rims that provide clearance for the Sport Edition brake calipers, I would like to get something with a removable protective ring. Supposedly these will work, but they are pricey:

I am also looking at upsizing in tire by a diameter of 1" and maybe width of 285. Maybe even going with a tougher tire (chunks of tread are missing because the BFG A/Ts are soft).

Or I could just stop rock crawling and preserve my rig for overland and lighter off-roading.

Anyway, my primary initial focus is on rims. If you know of anything that meets my requirements, please advise.

I must confess: I thought of those bolts as being bling instead of functional, so I blew off the recommendation. hwell:

I'll revisit. Need to see if they'll fit over the calipers.

I had a feeling you did so I thought I'd bring it up again.

I think I introduced them in a blingy way (and I do think they look good) but they're the same style as the wheels you were originally looking at and the changeable ring seems like something else you want.

I believe I've seen the classic IIs (same wheel without the ring) on a couple of 4Rs but can't say for sure they were SEs.

AR Mojave's? No silly chrome bolts, just a plain, simple, and cheap wheel...

Or do any of the wheels from SCS or FN Wheels catch your eye? Also just plain and simple wheels with no silly extras on.

No, but even though that's what you want, since you wheel it so hard, I really doubt that'll protect you for long. Unless I'm underestimating how strong they are...

No rings on those. If you're serious about those, also look at Black Rock and MB Wheels version. They're basically replicas but a bit cheaper...and lighter I believe.

Do they make 6-lug TRD wheels or are you using an adapter plate to make this work? I like the wheels but not having them available in 6-lug irritates me a bit...

I can't speak to that personally as I've never owned a set but I haven't really seen any bad reviews of them. They don't have ATX's Teflon coating but appear to have a similar matte black finish. I almost bought a set myself but ended up going with a different wheel.

No, but even though that's what you want, since you wheel it so hard, I really doubt that'll protect you for long. Unless I'm underestimating how strong they are...

Why would that not protect? The ring is the only thing exposed and can be replaced for $40.. That's easier than replacing the whole wheel.

That'd be a funny ticket to receive. American Racing Mojave Teflon's are my favorite aftermarket wheel for our trucks. They get my vote unless you decide to go for real bead-locks in which case rock on!

IIRC Hutchinson is the only DOT legal bead lock.

I'll soon have a set of 5 ProComp 7089 17" (-6 offset) wheels avail for sale for real cheap since they have some damage from rock crawling. They are perfectly usable.
