Sorry for your loss. When a furry family passes, it hurts for a long time.

A email I recieved, that has been passed around the web:

A Dog's purpose - from a 4 year old

Being a veterinarian, I was called to examine a ten year old Irish wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa and their little boy, Shane, were all very attached to Belker and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for the four-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a
few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion.

We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.

Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why."

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, "People are born so they can learn how to live a good life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?" The four-year-old continued, "Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."

I'm so sorry to hear about your Pup. We went through this recently and its tough. You will get better. One of the things that helped us was to make a charitable donation in our dogs name. Also Keep his ashes and plenty of photos. Again. Sorry to hear it man. :(

When I die, the most I could hope for would be to come back as a well taken care of, much loved dog. I don't think there's a better existence on this planet. Try to find comfort in knowing you were able to provide that for your friend.

Terrible. Sorry for your loss. I had to put my little rock climber down last August (3 weeks before her 15th b-day). Its been 16 months, and it still hurts to see pictures of her.

Sorry for your loss man... Got my dog in second grade and she's pushing 15... I'll be understanding how you feel somewhat soon...

Thanks, I am kind of happy it happened overnight without me having to make a decision on whether to put him down. That would be much more difficult I imagine.

I expected to get at least get another year out of the little guy....he was running around up until 5pm yesterday evening...when he started vomiting all over the place. I figured he just had a stomach ache, he did eat a bit of leftover turkey earlier. Not but 8 hours later he was gone.

So sorry to hear of ur loss. I've been through it a few times and it never gets easier. Lost my beloved German Shepard recently and after mourning him, my wife and I went and rescued another GS. Best thing we could've done. Again u have my condolences.

Just remember, "They say a dog is a mans best friend, but I don't even have enemies that will look me dead in the eye while taking a shit on my carpet".

I'm so sorry you're going through the loss of your sweet pup. My wife and I just lost our greyhound, Maya, at the end of October. This poem has helped me out a lot. I like to picture her at "the Bridge" playing with our other greyhound, Gwen (who passed 4 years ago).

With deepest sympathy...

Every time I know a person who has lost a 'friend' this comes to mind.

One of my favorite adages:

"It came to me that every time I lose a dog,
they take a piece of my heart with them.
And every new dog who comes into my life
gifts me with a piece of their heart.
If I live long enough, all the components of
my heart will be dog,and maybe
I will become as generous and loving
as they are."
