Ripcord's 2002 4Runner Sport Ed.

Am I the only one who can no longer see any of the pictures Ripcord has posted? If so, how do I go about fixing this issue? I still use this thread constantly for advice! Thanks in advanced!

Easy!! Send him some $$$ via Paypal to upgrade his Photobucket account and get unlimited bandwidth.

He has exceeded his monthly allotment (number of photo views allowed) for a free account, so Photobucket has cut off his photos until his monthly limit resets.

Because every thread like this becomes a spotted thread...

This pic is so depressing,:crybaby:
Ripcord's 4Runner was the first build thread i read on T4R.org, it was also one of my personal fav's and inspired me sooooooo much, so sad to see it stock again. 4-Ripcord thank you for all that you have done here on T4R, it really helped me out alot.:hail:

HAH thanks! who's coming with me?!? Ripcords got a check coming his way asap cause I need some of these dang pictures haha... but seriously!!

Sweet install, I am putting that hi on my list of future mods -- i've been missing info like that since buying my T4R -- props for taking on that project yourself!

I really love what you did with your truck, hope mine look like that one day:hatsoff:

Thanks. Best of luck.

Well obviously I don't have any updates, but I was looking through some of my old photos and spruced them up a bit. Ive never really shopped any of my photos before, I might have to start.

And heres a few of the a4

The a4 has been treating me alright. Ive had to replace the thermostat and some other stuff from some cooling issues, but nothing big. Ive been thinking about selling it lately and getting a b5 S4 instead. Seems like a better platform to actually put some money into.

Have you found a t4r.org forum equivalent for your Audi?

Your photos come out great, shop not needed. I want to go out on a limb and say your pics are magazine cover article worthy. What camera & lens are you using?

Thanks. Yeah Audizine is alright, not like here though.

Recently I have been using a canon t4i with the basic lens. haven't really tried to get good with it yet. Just playing with the levels on PS has made more of a difference than the fancy camera.

Hey, Jim... been a long time, man. Glad to see you're still around and doing well. How did your boarding season go?

Hey bud, has been a while.

boarding was pretty lame this year. Didn't work at the mountain and only got maybe 15 days in. Crap season though.

Hows things? Kiddo has got to be like 2 or 3 I want to say. Wow time flies.

Hey guys where can I get a cheap but good Bug Deflector for my 2001 Limited?

Btw, I really like your build Ripcord! I wish I have money to upgrade my 4runner like that lol

a couple of things to note on the b5 platform... great cars, but the interior leaves some to be desired for in quality or materials... but the big issue(s) for me is the motor... its basically a 2.8l thats been bread for competition(shortened the stroke slightly to achieve 2.7l) and then had two turbos a-fixed to it to force it to make power... well in theory it works fine, but in reality they just took that "girl next door" motor and tuned it into a "super model/premadona/high maintenance bi*ch".... and yes i mean high maintenance it every possible way. i used to work at a smaller independant german car shop/tuner, and we had several of the b5s come in, lovely cars but at about 90-100k the turbos needed to be replaced -that means the whole motor comes out, infact any work on the turbos or back of the motor and the motor is coming out. the o2 sensors when they need changed requires a special tool and some very skinny skilled hands and about 25min of wrenching(per upper sensor) once you understand how your gonna do it and have done it a couple of times. -oh yeah theres 4 o2 sensors too talk about PITA. yeah basically that motor is maintenance heavy, its a race bread motor from the ground up, and although its based off of the 2.8, almost nothing is interchangeable between the two. and parts for the 2.7 are about 2x the cost of the ones for the 2.8. but the silver lining to that is, when they are running and running good they scream and are a hoot to drive, 140 is effortless and feels like about 90 or so, and 90 easily feels like 50.

if you get one and ask me the first mods id be making would be to upgrade the braking system, ie bigger rotors and calipers... not that the car is under-braked in stock form, but its so easy for those cars to start making power and with that power comes speed, that you will soon over drive the stock brakes. and then id go for suspension, leaving power to the end. i have driven several b5s that were pushing over 450hp and 4wheel power slides were easily attainable on surface streets...

i remember one day i was trying to figure out a issue with one "cutting out" some times under hard acceleration, almost like fuel or spark was being cut. anyhow i was going through an itersection making a left hand turn onto a 5 lane road(2 lanes each way, with a center turn lane), and as i was just coming into the intersection(i had the green light to turn) and starting my turn i punched it in second gear at about 20mph... well i used up all 2 lanes and some of the shoulder and didnt get strait again and hooked back up till about 70mph... needless to say i had my adrenalin rush for the day(week). that car was one that had after market turbos, intercoolers, exhaust, stage II chip, and some other stuff... it was a fun car to drive and still would get 20-24mpg on the hwy.

bottom line is they are fun cars but costly cars. i really like the b6 platform other than the motors also need to be pulled at about 90-100k to do the timing chains $3-6k in just parts depending on how much you want to do... a lot of shops charge around $12k for that whole job right there though, hence why you can find b6 S4s all day long for under $10k, but all told id rather have the b6 over the b5, over all the build is a better one and more refined, more power, and way more low end grunt, better sound ect. and its getting harder and harder to find a nice b5 that has not been molested and or abused. and the ones that have not been are owned by purists and they will want a very pretty penny for it. -oh one last thing, stay far far away from the tiptronic in the b5 S4, those 2.7s ate those alive.

fwiw i think your a4 is sexy, and a nice machine, i think if you do "upgrade" to one of those others, you will actually find it a downgrade... you will soon miss the simplicity of what you have now. -lets face it, your a4 is still fun to drive.

Good to know, that seems to mimmic exactly what I have been reading. And to be honest I am fine with that. Im looking for a project. Ive got a job lined up out of college and zero expenses, need something to fill my weekends.

I fully intend to pull the motor, upgrade the turbos and every other part under the hood, redo the whole suspension and brakes, A lot of stuff. This will not be a DD for me.

Its not that I dont like the A4, its a great car. Just feels like a big boat, albeit a quick boat. And I run into the same mindset I had with the 4runner, its too nice to mess up. At the end of the day...I just miss having a project.

As as far as b6 s4.. its still a b6, I like the size of the b5. Also the b6 s4 is nearly 2 tons, the b5 has 800 lb advantage on that thing.

Yeah but that v8 makes way more power than that bi-turbo v6... Enough to more than overcome the 800lbs extra weight... Plus it has a v8 sound. I'd really only chose a b6 just because I think it would be easier to fine one that had not been molested. Both cars would require work and money, so its up to you and what you want... Both cars would be rewarding to. I guess with the b5 you have rs4 stuff you can add to it as well...

I plan on going full RS4 with lots of other stuff. Minus the widebody conv. And I dont care if I find one that needs work. Thats what projects are for!

Where'd you get that bug shield? I really like it. Wanted to find one for my own.

Today ALBPM and I met up at my house and installed 231mm Tundra brakes on both of our trucks. The job took like 6 hours, but we were just taking our time and talking 4runners.

He is a really neat guy, fun to work with! And his truck is really nice.

I bought all of my parts at Napa Auto parts. Rotors and 13WL calipers from a 2005 4x4 V8 Tundra.
Brakes + Taxes - Core refunds = $351.98

Old stuff off:

Last Monday, a few friends and I went to Elephant Butte lake. I somehow managed to get 19.5 mpg there and back, with a little playing in the sand too.

At the lake:
