rkntoy's Oil Changes and Broken Things

I will eventually get them on. Got the tires all mounted up and will sneak them in this week to get balanced. Then I have to drive to LA and back for work. When I get back the SPC arms are getting adjusted to the G setting, 861s going on the back, and I finally figured I better get the gussets welded on before I broke one.

rkntoy , you've definitely got a unique rig. I would be curious how it feels to drive that setup/drivetrain in a 3rd gen. That is the ideal setup for a 1st gen, but the 3rd is a little bit bigger pig.

LOL. Those are SPC UBJ's on the spindle. He already has the SPC's. Read his sig.

Those are definitely not SPC UBJs. The threaded post on SPC joints faces down and is inserted into a slug adapter that is pressed into the spindle...

This actually brings up a good question. I have always wondered how people accomplish press work on the UBJ section of the spindle after welding on gussets. It seems like it would be a PITA to press anything in/out with them in place.

I dont think it matters because he said above he's getting SPC's.

You are both indeed correct and I am indeed an idiot on this one. Serves me right for posting without actually looking closer. As usual when I say something stupid I'll leave the original post unedited. It'll remind me not to be an idiot. lol.

These are a backup set of spindles so I could weld them up while still driving the rig around.

Yeah, I figured that out since the two members upthread where kind enough to correct my idiocy. I'm still wearing the dunce cap and promise not to take it off till midnight. lol

I really like the setup. Can still cruise at 80 on the freeway. Won't set any land speed records. I bought the 3rz on purpose because I knew I wanted to wheel it and wanted a little lighter /less HP.

The gusset does make it tough to use the press. Not concerned about getting the SPC adapter in but getting a stock UBJ in would take some work.

Dude!!! Those wheels ❤️[emoji1598][emoji1362]
Those are sick.
It's gonna be awesome to have the 861 in the rear, and actually handle all the weight you carry in/on/around that thing.
Happy Late Birthday!

Fortunately I found 5 of the 6 fender flare pieces I need over the weekend. The ATX beadlocks are almost exactly the same backspace but 1 inch wider. I see fix-it tickets in my future.

I'm surprised I'm not wrong more often. Everything I know I learned from you people.

No mechanic work this weekend (or for a while) as I was recovering from my week being gone driving the 2600 mile Bend-Sandy,OR-Long Beach,CA circuit. The drive time gave me time to ponder my RTT mounting dilemma - how to access space under RTT in the roof basket with keeping it as low as possible for my poor overworked 4 banger when it gets on the freeway.

So I made my own hinges. Pop the pins from one side to open. Pop all 4 to remove tent.

Half Doors

One of the things I get asked about is my half doors. I cut them a lot lower than most - and to add rigidity I made the reinforcement panels out of aluminum sheet that I bent w/ .25" sides and rivited in place. Used the butyl soundproofing around the speaker - may swap out for an aluminum panel (or not - sounds like work...)

My definite upgrade for the doors this year is to make snap in windows and a wind deflection channel so that wind doesn't grab the leading edge.

Got the 861 springs on which leveled it out nicely. RTT hinges almost done and should be fully mounted by tomorrow night.

And I got my 4 birthday presents mounted on the rig. Now I really need some flares before I get more fix-it tickets.

Lookin good Steve!
I bet those springs handle the weight much nicer. Am I gonna have to come out and weld those PCK brackets on myself or what?!
