rkntoy's Oil Changes and Broken Things

Front knuckles swapped with the gusseted ones. Final fix for Hells Revenge getting its revenge in March. Off for an alignment and then some beadlock testing tomorrow - after I get a center console boxed up.

Got some playing in today. Hopefully someone else got pics of us in the snow because I was too busy breaking trail in off camber snow by trying to grab tree wells with the upslope tires. Almost got all the way to the Taylor Burn guard station before we had to head back to Bend. Even got to rescue a Jeep that was sliding toward a creek on the way back.

Beadlocks were great. Got some good testing in at about 5psi.

Unfortunately the only pics I got were at Taylor Lake.

Still have some more trimming to do...

That was very nice of you to yank the Jeep out of harms way. I've helped more Jeep guys recover than any other vehicle. It's usually not built Jeeps. It's usually a stock Jeep with stock tires and a driver who has no clue what he's doing. He also usually has his wife yelling at him the whole time. lol

Glad to hear the testing run on the beadlocks went well. I really need to get some but it probably won't be till next year at this point. Being able to go to 5PSI and below without worrying is so nice.

Not taking pics is something I completely understand. There's a few of my trip reports that just kind of stop because conditions got to the point that paying attention to driving or not stopping was way more important than photo's.

Do you have lower shock mount guards on your rig? I keep beating mine up pretty good and once the dual case goes in I'm sure I'll have the torque to snap them. I think there's a member on here that was making custom one's and I'd like to get a few folks together and see if he'd do a group order.

I don't have guards. Link to a thread on them?

Looks like someone got a pic while I was trying not to slide in to rocks and some trees coming up on the passenger side.

Anyone ever had a CV that didn't seal up at the diff? I just put a new one in and it keeps leaking. I did have to tap it a little to get it to fully seat when I installed it.

Going to pull it out and stick in another one from my stockpile.

Maybe the sealing plate got bent or loose during removal or install? I haven't had one leak but if that plate is damaged that could be the reason.

Plate is brand new and perfect. Will look again once I get it back out. I am wondering if tolerances are off on the stub that goes in to the diff.

You could run a quick grease test to check that the CV is interfacing with the diff seal in the correct spot.

Found it! Driver side oil seal. Not sure why it started leaking now, as the metal on the other side looked like it got dinged a while ago.

And all my oil seal drivers were the wrong size. So I found out that my demolished hub was the perfect size to fab one.

Well shit.

The seal was definitely bad. But it is almost like my "new" Napa reman cv is too short. Leak was fixed until I drove it to work and the axle has now slid part way out.

I guess I will measure my old one when I get home.

Not what I was hoping for. Looks like the Aussie Locker side gear is pushed about 3/16 - 1/4 of an inch to the outside which is why the cv was sliding out far enough that the oil seal wouldn't engage.

Hoping it was the cv was obviously wishful thinking. I know what I am doing tomorrow. Looks like I am down for a while as I will be traveling most of next week.

Used my pick to measure and compare with a spare. Top is one in rig.

Interesting discovery. Looking forward to hearing what you find is messed up inside.
Sucks it'll be down and you gotta pull and split the front end again!

It sucks, but this is the Aussie that I got shipped to me from Alabama in a complete diff for $200. I am assuming that I snapped a pin or two. Since I am heading out of town I am going to hand it off to my friend to tear down and send me pics.

Know of anyone selling an ARB?

Stay tuned. Played around with the diff this morning with my friend that has built up a few hundred differentials. It is working like it should, not making any weird noises, no metal pieces on the drain plug. So we have sent pics off to Torq-Masters Industries to see what they say.

I had convinced myself it was the carrier, but my friend feels that if the carrier went I would be noticing something and is convinced that if we pull it apart it will be a waste of time.

We shall see what they say...

Interesting info on the front diff.

Torq-Masters referred me over to ECGS and I guess this is a known problem with the lunchbox-style lockers and our carriers. Some have issues - some don't. Nothing wrong with function except for the oil seal issue.

I will write up a more detailed post on this as I went back and searched the forums again I see no one else having this issue.
