Thanks to both who posted this comment, it’s definitely good to have options.

For me, awnings are the way and the truth, LOL. In fact i’ve had an awning that spent time on 3-4 different vehicles. It was just plain wore out.

As such my new ironman awning is sitting in my garage, as i wait for my LFD crossbar shipment.

Ironman has a good design, side walls and an annex available, and has a trick LED light for evening cookout’s/meal prep. All for a reasonable price.

One of the big reasons I went with slumberjack instead of a roof rack awning is the ability to also use it without my truck. There are times when I'm at a camping spot where it's not possible to have my truck close by, so I can set up the SJ on it's own.

Yup, i hear yah. That’s a great reason.

Our camping has polarized to either dispersed (e.g. yellow post) where our car is central to our camping and doesn't move for a day or two, or an AirBnB/hotel with nearby day trips, with short stops along the trail for meals/hiking, where we’d want some shade/rain cover.

This is interesting - an annex as opposed to either a ground tent or a RTT. Thank you for enlightening me on this option - I was going down the rabbit hole of replacing my ground tent with a RTT.

Do you have the annex? Just curious your experience should you have it.

Take the time to check all the passes and back roads are actually open before you plan your route, so that you don't have to wing it and get in a fight with your exhausted girlfriend while you frantically search for a camping spot in the dark after doing a massive detour which results in you threatening to drive her to straight to the airport and fly her home because you're not going to let her ruin the trip where you get to actually use 4LO for once and you've been looking forward to for ages and have screwed up yourself through lack of planning and by leaving everything to the very last minute as usual.
