Robb235's Front Mount Turbo Build

not entirely accurate. most automotive rubbers have been updated to alcohol resistant compounds. there's a few guys out there running e85 already with no problems.

I will be trying E85 myself after I get the turbo kit and URD's fuel kit.

And when were those updates made? Ever played with a boosted motor? Know what happens when you lean out under boost? I'm just sayin, I'm about 90% sure our systems weren't designed to be Flex Fuel compatible. The quick research I just did, I didn't find anything conclusive, just a bunch of "Well I did it and it hasn't failed yet". Sure would hate to bank my motor on that logic. If you have something more conclusive I'd love to see it. I've been wrong before, at least according to my wife.

Baby steps... that's my philosophy on this. I've got a water/meth kit to help out when I first get going with the turbo. Will keep the boost low, and will keep an eye on AFRs to see how things look. If things start looking dangerous, I'll look into the intercooler, URD fuel timing controller, etc.

I'm tossing around the idea of throwing on the 315cc Supra injectors I have, and filling up with E85. E85 generally requires 30% more fuel flow, and the Supra injectors are approximately 30% bigger... Seems like a good match?

To what end? E85 isn't going to make any more power unless you're running boost and need it for the anti-knock properties. Even if you reflashed the ECU with an E85 tune the benefits on a NA motor aren't significant.

I'm sorry if I came off rude to you but there's no reason for you to respond like you did seemingly in an attempt to insult me. I in fact work on turbocharged diesel engines. And i do know quite well what happens when you lean out a mixture. But that's okay man whatever floats your boat.

As for for the OP baby steps is the way to go. And definitely look into the products just for that sense of security.

Don't forget cooler operating temps and the ability to run gobs of timing.

Not really looking for more power by running E85 with an NA motor. I'd only try it to see what happens and if it works. In theory it would work, but theories don't always pan out in the real world. If the combo of larger injectors + E85 doesn't work while NA, then I certainly don't want to do it boosted. Would likely drive around for a week with E85, see how it goes, then fill it back up with gas and put the stock injectors back in. Then when turbo time comes, switch back to E85 for the anti-knock properties.

Oh I know all about the benefits. I run E85 in my car that's making a little over 500whp, but he doesn't have the turbo on yet, and has no way to adjust the timing to take advantage of it even once he does.

I've never looked into it, but is there even an aftermarket tuning solution for the 4Runner that would allow a custom flash tune? I know there are several options for GM vehicles, and BMWs but I've never had the urge to try a Toyota.

Do you mean running no piggy back or custom ecu? Just plugging it in and flashing?

Think of it as just a trial run. If it runs ok while NA, then that gives me incentive to run E85 boosted. If it doesn't run ok, I either have to figure out why, or scrap the idea all together.

Yeah, he's talking about just plugging into the OBD2 port and reflashing the ECU with something like HP Tuners. You can go into the ECU itself and edit fuel maps, timing tables, turn off sensors (good for getting rid of trouble codes), change transmission shift points, change when it switches from closed loop to open loop, etc. Unfortunately Toyota makes their ECUs highly encrypted or something, so nobody has been able to flash them, so we're forced to use rudimentary piggy backs to fine tune things.

My big point is that you should minimize the guesswork going into your management and tuning, this is probably the most critical part of going turbo. I am reading a lot of posts that are just best guesses based on what some other guy did online. Hit the books, do more research.

When I said the PCM doesent understand boost, it only knows what to do to a point, supercharger boost is also on all the time, not like a turbo, which has different characteristics.

If you don't want to heed that warning that is totally ok, nobody here is trying to be a jerk. But if you don't look into some way of controlling fuel and spark for the turbo you might have a day where the cool-aid man shows his ugly face through te side of your engine block.

I'm not trying to insult you. You would know if I was. I was asking questions. I work in a field where "it worked for this guy" and uncertainty kill people. I stopped accepting things at face value long ago, mostly because I end up being the first guy it doesn't work for.

If you have, or anyone else for that matter, has any facts or documentation or something that says our trucks are flex fuel compatible then I'm all ears. Educate me. Otherwise, its foolish to recommend something to someone that may damage or destroy their motor diem the road. That's where I'm coming from.

Yeah I know what you're getting at. And as for the flex fuel I almost see it as a gimick, just browsing YouTube watching high HP turbo builds, there's a lot of them running e85. So far nobody has mentioned fuel system upgrades besides pump and injectors.

You don't have to take anything as fact truth or anything. Just my opinion.

Correct me if im wrong, our stock fuel system can potentially handle e85..
Assuming timing is static, wouldn't supercharged 7.35psi be requiring 50% more fuel than stock...?
I'm probably completely wrong lol...
