rock chip

I know, I know, rock chips happen. Often. But I just picked up a used 4Runner and there are a few chips around the car, especially on the hood. Here is one:

(I apologize for the fingers, my phone's camera wouldn't autofocus properly without)

I don't need to fix these perfectly, I just want to prevent anything from growing since rust has developed. My family used to get touch up kits from Toyota that had a silver substance that you would put on before putting the paint on, but all I can find now, at least at the dealer, is touch-up paint.

Should I do anything for the rust or just use touch-up paint? Claybar? Any other products?

Are your results as good or "perfect" as theirs? Their photos make it look like a complete respray. I know it can't be a 100%, but I would like to get close to 85-90%. I've used other blob elimination kits, the results are decent. Most chips are still noticeable, just not as badly as left untouched.

I'm really particular about the minor scratches and chips that occur on my cars, so I was actually pleasantly surprised how well it covered the front bumper chips and road rash. I can't say it was 100% but there were a few chips that really did blend in so well that I couldn't spot them anymore. I definitely would say it improved the looks 80-95%...much better than the factory touch up paint--I'll never go back to that!

I bought touch-up paint from Toyota yesterday. I think I'm going to try Langka.

Is there anything I need to do about the rust? If there is a solution I can put on it, I would rather do that than try to sand or scrape anything.

Also, any thoughts on the following scratches near my wheel well? My nail doesn't "catch" on them. Can I just use a scratch remover from Autozone or something?

You'll need to brush some rust converter in the chip first. Otherwise it will continue to rust under the touch up. You should be able to get some at autozone or auto paint supply.

Just clean the area good to remove any dirt, use a touch up brush and touch up the rust. When the rust turns from brown to black you can then touch it up with paint!

It looks like paint transfer. You can try Meguiar's Scratch-X on it.

I've used that stuff. Results are not even close to their pictures. The color match was laughable...until you remind yourself how much you paid for terrible touch-up paint. Don't waste your money.

Thank you bootown. I'll just stick with (what I already have) Langka and Toyota touch-up paint and go about my detailing.

walmart sells these little pens that have sand paper at the tip....they are in the auto section near sand paper and bondo....you just put the tip in the chip and twist it...will remove the rust.
