Roof Rack Issues

OK, this has been driving me insane so I'm reaching out!

I have a '00 T4R with a 'naked roof'. It just has the pre-drilled holes for the tracks that are covered up by a plastic strip.

I'm trying to haul a 17ft canoe about 800km a couple of times this Summer plus a few shorter hauls.

So, what are my options here??

I've talked to numerous dealers and Yakima themselves and no one can tell me how to hook an aftermarket rack up to my rig.

I don't mind buying the aftermarket tracks and installing them but Yakima couldn't tell me if (a) they fit in the existing holes or (b) if I have to lay it over the existing holes then drill different holes?

I've desperately searched for a used stock roof rack and can't find one anywhere within 2000km. Further, I've talked to Toyota in Canada and USA and the stock roof rack has been discontinued.

I really don't want to use foam blocks here guys......help me out!

I'm in Canada. Would gladly pay for shipping from anywhere but I need the tracks for sure.

I've scoured all of our junkyards within 2000km both in person and by phone. These damn trucks are tanks and they're hard to find!

I could build you some simple cross bars to attach to your stock holes? that way you dont need tracks but end up with the same effect. Ive never shipped anything to Canada but they would be ups-able sized...

A custom set-up might be a good way to go at this point.

If you're going to be hauling a 17ft canoe, the OEM crossbars will come up a bit short. Since you don't have the rails on already, try a full system.

I don't know why the Yakima rep couldn't help you out? I did a quick search on my local rack supplier's site in Toronto for a 3 Gen Runner and got a bunch of options both Yak and Thule. You'd need to start with your base feet and crossbars then add a canoe rack to it. They're not a cheap date though.

He changed his mind and so they are on my carport floor. I am in VA though and not sure what the postage would be, if you want them you can have them free, (hopefully I get a tick in the good karma bucket!!).

That would be a good option. Then you can get a set of Thule or Yakima feet and bars.

The other option would be that both companies offer systems where they mount around the doors.

Either way I wouldn't use the factory crossbars to mount a kayak. I wouldn't feel comfortable doing so.

I've hauled single canoes and kayaks on my OEM cross bars no problem. Just make sure you tie down the bow and stern to the front and rear bumpers! The tracks are far too short, so the cross bars are too close together to support a longer boat without securing the ends.

If you want to carry more than one boat, you've got to get some longer crossbars. I've got yakima 72" crossbars that are just barley long enough for two canoes, and I'm looking at replacing the OEM tracks with Yakima tracks that might be a little longer.
