Roof rack weight limits and Tents

Are the published roof rack weight limits for travel? I'm interested in getting a different rack mostly for a roof top tent, but all of them say there is a 300ish pound weight limited. With a 100 lb tent and two people, it seems you crush through that weight limit pretty quick....

Also, it seems like not as many 4th gens run rooftop tents. When searching I find a lot of 3rd Gen/5th Gen posts, but not as many 4th gens. Anyone have an opinion as to the reason?

Here is the tent I'm looking at. Lots of good reviews about the tent and the customer service, plus its half the cost of most of the other tents I've found.

The 300# is dynamic load. The racks can handle more in a static situation. You will have no problem with tent and people on the upgraded roofrack.

Would be very interested in your final decision and how she rides/drives with that on the roof?!! I have been looking at RTT for about a year now and just cant make a final decision.
 
Wouldn't it just be easier and less time consuming just pitching a standard tent for a night.

Sorry but thats just over doing it id feel more comfortable in the back of the truck instead.

better yet pull the back passenger ass cushion out throw a 3 inch memory form pad in the back and you have a awesome comfortable bed and you don't have to worry about flying away and have room for a 6'5 person and 2 german shepherds or in some cases a yapping nagging women.
oh wait you say what about everything in the truck I'm carrying throw it up on the roof if you're able to carry something weird and ridiculous like that.

Its like a redneck decided one day hey I'm tried of walking to my tree stand every day and then having to get the truck after bagging something. so instead he said ill put the tree stand on the roof of my truck. :hunter:

When we do multi-day trips where we are moving everyday the RTT makes it nice and easy. It folds up within a few min. I still haven't broken down and purchased on yet as my wife doesn't like ladders. So we put up & take down the ground tent everyday. Usually takes us longer than the other folks who have RTT's. We use the BajaRack to extra fuel, water and other gear as the rear cargo area has our Engel Fridge, tent and gear we need easier/quicker access to. So no sleeping inside.

i wish my wife likes to camp or the outdoors. When i do camping, its just me and the kids.

I have a active search for a roof top tent! I want one but dont want to spend a bunch of money on one :P

Few things. First, carrying 600 pounds in the cab is nothing. Carrying 600 pounds on the roof while driving is a problem. Hence why putting something up top that is light and you add weight to while sleeping, versus having something heavy up top and room inside. Not everyone goes overnight camping and only needs to take their naggy woman and dog.

As for the tree stand idea, i don't think you get the point of tree stands. they're supposed to not be readily visible to a deer so the deer doesn't look at them and saw "hmm i wonder if there is a predator above me right now" but says "oh look a tree better graze now because i'm a deer". 4runners with tents on top are not naturally occurring flora or fauna and throw some alarms to wildlife.

Third, not everyone goes camping down by the river next to RVs. I grew up in Alaska but am currently on the wrong side of the country (for school). I'm trying to get set up so that in my minimal free time I can get back to Alaska and go exploring. Alaskan camping is a little different as we have wildlife. Hence wanting to be off the ground. Bears don't really appreciate that a tent is for privacy and tend to instead think its a christmas present wrapped up for their eating pleasure.

So to sum it up:
1. Easy setup/takedown each day
2. Keep room for dynamic loads in an area where they're intended to be (this is in the cab)
3. sleep protected from wildlife
4. as i've recently learned, it doubles as a tree stand for hunting since redneck hunters can't walk very far due to the weight of their redneckage.....

Thats how I found this one. Its $900 from bass pro shops. My fiance likes to go camping, but I'm thoroughly convinced would like to go more if I didn't make her blow up a sleeping pad thats only .5" thick and you're guaranteed to roll off of every night. (I've always done backpack camping and refuse to buy a sleeping pad for the car).

Think you missed the sarcasm with the tree stand joke obviously. But in short where u put a stand does not matter to a dear they can not see very well. its the movement and smell that triggers them considering most are wearing some kind of orange safety vest which stands out like a neon sign

Whether you have a tent of the floor or on your car a bear if they are curious is going to check it out has nothing to do where its at. keep food in bears containers and high off the ground. Do you think Alaska is the only place with bears and wildlife? My last 5 trips to Alaska primitive camping mind you I never had a issue with bears making their way thru my 2 man tent you have a better chance of a moose kicking your ass then a bear bothering you if you take the proper precautions and know your surroundings. I have 50 acres of land in eastern Tennessee in the smokeys which has bears walking around all the time again never a issue there either that doesn't include the two common types os deadly snakes hanging out there among other things.

To each is their own bro I just don't see it being practical IMO which is just that my view. Then again I prefer primitive camping verse your car camping

BTW check out pine grove state park if you haven't while you enjoy your stay in PA

I've not made it East into the state at all but I've been looking for good places to go. I'll have to check that place out.

Also, the sarcasm was noted hence the further sarcasm in regards to considering my 4runner a treestand now.

Use cases aren't universal. We can all agree on that.

Also, please forgive my ignorance as to the proper use of a tree stand. I've always hunted on the tundra, and there aren't any trees to hide in....
