roof rack weight limits

I have an '06 sport and I'm looking to purchase a work bench, it's 7 feet long and weights 250 lbs. Will I have problems if I put that on the roof rack and take a 30 mile trip home? How much weight will the roof rack take before it becomes a problem? Delivery is $$$ so I rather drive it home myself if I can. Thanks.

On the same note, will I be able to carry more weight with an aftermarket roof rack?

The Owner's Manual (2006) says 120 lbs. for the factory rack.

You could just stick it out the back window. I've done that many times and it supports alot more weight.

I second the back window idea (assuming the bench is in pieces). I always do that with 8ft lengths of lumber.

Also remember that taking 250 lbs off of your vahicle may result in serious injury. If it's too big to fit inside and too heavy for the top, I'd rent a trailer from uhaul. $20 for the day and you can throw anything you want in there. Cheaper than delivery and no risk of damaging your vehicle.

I completely agree, rent a uhaul and you won't have to worry. 250 lbs. is too much for the roof.

Ever hear the horror stories of U-Haul? They are more dangerous than something sticking 2 0r3feet out of the back window. I've rented 2 before, and they all had to go back once I got on the highway.

I've heard the horror stories, but I'd rented trailers from them for over a decade without any issues. I always inspect the trailer before I leave the lot though (tire pressure, tread on the tires, lights work).

Stick it in the back and leave the back door open if you have to, just secure it.

I probably rent U-hauls 12 - 15 times a year and have NEVER had a problem. I just drove one 500 miles round trip last week. Yesterday I had one behind me for about 75 miles. They are heavy and tow very well. I do it in a heartbeat rather than trashing my T4R. BTW, the 5x8 is only $10 / day. It is a no-brainer.

2005 factory rack weight limit?

I am a bit confused here... Toto posted that the factory rack weight limit is 120 lbs (based on the owners manual) and Hank states that the rack can handle 165 lbs.

I recently purchased a 2005 V6 limited T4R and have not found the weight limit in the manual. The rack does not have a sticker stating the wieght limits either.

I just got a Rola cargo basket that is much heavier (38 lbs) than I had anticipated. I am planning a number of southern Utah treks and will need to place camping equipment and gasoline up to.

Does anyone know the wieght limit for a 2005 factory rack?

Ever hear the horror stories of U-Haul? They are more dangerous than something sticking 2 0r3feet out of the back window. I've rented 2 before, and they all had to go back once I got on the highway.

I've rented 3 so far and no problems beyond some marker lights out. Check the tires to make sure they're matched and in decent shape, load enough weight on the tongue and you'd be fine, especially for only 30 miles.

My U-Haul trips were:
Wilmington, Delaware->Columbus, Ohio
Davidson, North Carolina-> Columbus Ohio
Boston-> Columbus, Ohio

Get the refurbished ones! I forgot to mention the ones I had were all REALLY old, around 1970. The one we got for a 4k trip was refurbished and we usually ran at 70 - 85. No problems at all!

I can tell you that my 3rd gen '99 limited does in fact have a weight limit of 165 lbs. I've probably come close to using it too, with my Yakima roof box stuffed full of camping gear.

Maybe the 4th gen can't carry as heavy a load up there? :shrug:

I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a RTT that weights 145lbs. I know that's over the recommended weight for the rack, but would adding an extra crossbar alleviate that since the crossbars appear to be the limiting factor?

I really don't want to fork out another grand for a new rack that's going to be entirely used up by the tent.

Any other suggestions?

All depends on the type of RTT you get, if it's the type where the roof rack has to not only support the tent but also any person/s that gets into the tent, then no the factory rack is never going to support that kind of weight, if the factory rack has to only support the weight of the tent and not the occupants then I think you will be fine, I would however add the additional cross bar or even better add 2 more to give you that warm and fuzzy feeling.
