Any good ideas for a first gen roof rack? I need a way to carry my canoe and don't really like the foam pads.

Yup. Load bars with gutter mount towers. I see them in my local classifieds for around $75 all the time.

There is on the front of the shell above the windows, and if you want the rack to sit over the rear you can buy or make a set of gutters that bolt on to the shell.

Here's the yakima rack on my brothers 4runner. Seems like it'd do the trick for you.

I've seen a picture of one that was bolted onto the side of the shell. It had a wide foot print at least it looked like it. Every time I do a search there are very few first gens in it. I can make it but just need to see a few ideas.

I used an adjustable ladder rack. U usually see em on vans. Rated at 500lbs. Mounted to the rain gutters on the cab to just clear the sunroof and as far back on the removeable top as possible. Picked it up at a yard sale for $20.

Rhino Rack has a setup that installs tracks. That way you don't need rain gutters. I really like their racks as well! Looks a lot nicer than Thule or yakima!

This is what I'm planning to do over the holidays. Uses Blazer or S10 risen rail so no need to buy the expensive tower/foot kit, just the mount hat clamps around the rails.

I'm just curious, so i plan on fabbing my own roof rack, but i've heard that the stock rails wont hold a lot of load? If i need better rails, what kind? Anyone with experience would be awesome. Thanks guys.

Thule and Yakima and others make a kit to install small sections of artificial gutters on camper shells to allow the use of roof racks with rain gutter mount feet/towers. These work great on first gen tops.
This is Yakima's kit, available at Amazon (Amazon.com: Yakima Side Loader: Sports & Outdoors)

It requires drilling two holes per side, and once mounted it makes a very good support for the gutter style foot at the rear of the rack.
I mounted the front load bar feet to the rearmost gutter section of the cab. This allows the sunroof to open, and with the standard Thule feet, I can carry lumber or a ladder on top with the sunroof open.

Nope, the stock rails don't hold squat. Mine snapped off on a recent wheeling trip along with my Rola rack. I'll let you know if and when I come up with something.

Right. The front pair of feet attach to the cab's existing gutter, and the rear pair of feet attach to the bolted-on gutter sections. They are very strong. I wouldn't drill holes in the top of one of my collector rigs, but for this unit, it's perfect.
