Roof Racks for BIKES

Okay, so i look forward to using my 4runner for biking with 2-4 friends ALOT in the future.

1. When using your roof for bikes, is it only possible when using ( 2 poles that each tire connects to?)

2. Can they also fit on roof racks?

3. I want a good looking roof rack like these:

4. If roof racks can even hold bikes, Can these ones i posted work? or do you know of any similar looking ones can mount mountain bikes on them?

I know with the Yakima Loadwarrior or Megawarrior baskets, they come with a crossbar that you can set up anywhere on top of the basket, and you can easily add a bike rack or two to the top of it (Possibly 3 on the Megawarrior)

I also know my mountain bike fit in the back of the 4Runner by just taking off the seat and front wheel, and folding down the single back seat, so you should in theory easily be able to haul 4 people and 4 bikes with a roof rack, the 2 in the back will just have to get a little cozy with each other lol.

This. I did the roof thing for like 10 rides with just my wife and I. I am a pretty strong dude, but that's a big, awkward lift.

Unfortunately my hitch rack doesn't clear my spare tire on the CBI, so I have been using my 86 pickup for bike duty.

To carry FOUR bikes though you're going to need crossbars... I am fairly certain that you won't be able to fit more than 3 mountain bikes mounted in a basket. I am confident I could fit 4 bikes, staggered back to front, on my 50" Thule Crossbars.

If you're deadset on using a basket though, you could get some wider crossbars and mount 2 bikes on the basket, and one on either side using the crossbars.

I agree, but so does having to remove the hitch rack to open the rear gate. I know they make some groovy folding hitch racks, but the bikes make that difficult too.

I've had bikes on roof racks on 5 different vehicles, still the best if you want to carry gear and/or people. But I hate loading and unloading on my land cruiser roof, just way too high.

I'm going to adapt some old Yakima trays to the factory rack on my 4runner, but it's an easy load comparatively speaking.

With the basket you could get away with just a fork mount and some bungees!

Hitch mount and end it...You can pull the pin to lower the upright section, so you can easily open the hatch.

You can connect two of these together and carry four bikes total.
