I searched and could not find it. Is there anyone runninng a rack on the stock bars? If So, what type of mount?

I was looking at this rack. But am not sure it would work or how I would attach it. I'm sure I could fab something with u bolts etc.

I like this rack a lot. On the site you referenced, there's a picture of how it is attached to the rails using special clamps that are basically reshaped u bolts. The bolts are listed on that same website and sell for $35 for a set of 4.

I am looking into this on

Baja Rack: racks_list_inside

i am concerned that the expanded metal on top (mesh) will eat the foam fingers at the automatic carwash... yes... i use those from time to time in a hurry.

anyone able to chime in?

i would have posted a new thread but i am a newb yet.

Search here for info on Baja racks. Major rust issues. Look cool until then though

+1 on that. I had a baja flat rack on my FJ for a little over a year before I noticed major flaking of powdercoat and rusting bad!! This was only 2 years ago so this is after they claimed to havd fixed the powdercoat issue.

Beautiful rack until it rusts!

I have it and it's a great rack for the price and what I need it to do.

I needed the fairing as it had a lot of wind noise without. Get the Rhino Rack fairing and it will fit. I put some rubber weatherstripping in the clamps to help it grab the round bars better as it's made for elliptical bars.

Also, get the u-bolts and it attaches right to the stock crossbars.

I think that this will work and sit down inside the rails. Or just slightly above. And provides limitless tiedown opportunities.

http://m.autoanything.com/roof-racks/rhino-rack-steel-mesh-platform

Size small for 188.10

Mounted to these flipped over-the-top

http://www.4xinnovations.com/03-09-4RNR-Rola-Rack-Mount-Kit_p_43.html

For 80ish bucks

And about maybe 10 bucks in hardware.

It would be a bit longer than the stock rails but extending past the back would be okay.

A little more thinking but I think this will work

Did you need the fairing? Any idea what the stock bars hold weight wise?
Any more pics like from the side etc?
I see you sold it. Was there a reason why? Upgrade?

I sold it because I upgraded my roof rack. I put the fairing because it's noisy without it.

I like where you are going with this. I may do this too. Couple of thoughts:

Those Rola rack mounts say they are for 4th gen 4runners and they don't guarantee they will will work with 5th gens. I had a 4th gen and don't recall a big difference in rail tracks.

You can't go too far back because there's a stupid big and tall shark fin antenna back there.

Look up that rack on Amazon. There are some photos in the reviews. I think some are from a person with a 4Runner.

I have the medium size, I think, and I love it. I simply attached it to the stock cross bars using the supplied U bolts.
I did initially have some issues with wind noise but I covered the front 8-10" or so with a piece of sintra (a thin pvc type material) and that solved the problem.
I run a set of Thule cross bars on top of the rack as well.

STX4Runner - Howdy neighbor. Did you purchase the 38" wind fairing? How did you attach it to the mesh platform? Which u-bolts did you use (they have a standard u-bolt, heavy duty, euro, etc)?

Would it be a big bother for me to ask for a couple of close-up photos?

If necessary, I would cut a small section out where the antenna is. I've read in other threads where those mounts can be used in 5th gens just flipped upside down

I just used the low-profile Rola mounts flipped upside down on my 5th Gen, worked great:

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/238047-installed-rola-low-profile-mounts-5th-gen.html

I mounted it with the lower rail behind the shark fin, to push it as far back behind the sunroof as possible.

$221, done.

Rhino Rack

I believe i got the 38 inch fairing. Just measure between the rails and get the largest that will fit. Like I said, I think the 38 incher, but can't remember right now and don't have any receipts or any documents anymore.

Here's the link.

Rhino-Rack Wind Fairing - 38 - #RF2 | Rhino-Rack

I used their attachments but added some rubber weatherstripping as it's made for elliptical bars not rounds. Just got back from a 3,000 mile tour of the southwest (Texas, New Mexico, Utah and Arizona) and it did great.

These were the U bolts:

I'll see if i have any photos or try and take some for you soon. I don't have the rack on the vehicle right now and probably won't keep it on unless I'm going to need it. It's so easy to take on and off with this set up.
