Roof rola basket with custom mounts

Just finish building and installing the custom mounts for the rola roof basket.
and replaced my brush guard spot light with Hella 500 retro fitted with HID

nice job on the flush mounts.. i have been trying to find some new ideas for mounts since i dont trust and like the roof rack sitting on factory cross bars. i might just have to do something like that.
 
looks really good. do you have any more details or pics of the mounts and how you mounted them in the rails? i've been putting off getting this rack til i can figure out what to do about mounting it similar to this bc i won't fit in my garage or parking deck at work if i just mount it to the factory cross bars :redbrick:. luckily i have a friend that wants some practice welding, so he's gonna help me fab something up if i can figure out a good design idea.
 
Looks good. Your runner looks a lot like mine (well, how it came from the factory anyways) - only difference is you have black mirrors.

Yes I agree the original roof rack is a little too weak, considering part of the cross bar is made of plastic.
Anyways here is the items needed to build the custom mounts.
You need:
Two L shaped metal measuring 2 1/4 X 1 1/2 and 1 1/2 X 1 1/2. They are both 4 feet long.<br>

Then you would need bolts that would fit into the holes of the metal pieces.
Cut the metal pieces into 1 feet sections to provide good support.<br>

To hold the mounts to the roof rail I went to the junk yard and fround my self a 96-02 4Runner and took the metal slides with the bolt hole so I can add more mounting points to the roof rail. I added 5 of those metal slides to each side. I used bolts that holds the roof rail to the roof, alone with washers to bolt the mounts for security reasons. <br>

As you can see on the picture above I reused the long U bolt provided by Rola and a few more U bolts that I brought to secure the basket to the mounts.

After this simple steps you should have pretty good mounts to hold your basket. So far weight tested to 250lbs stationary.

I agree it looks similar, but it took a lot of cheap junk yard parts and craigslist luck made it look like this. Here is what it looked when I just brought it.

Ahh, I thought I almost found my twin! Mine seems to be an extremely rare trim package. I've found pics on the web of one other one that was identical to mine (actually it's the one 4crawler uses in his body lift write-up) but that's it. In almost 10 years of owning my runner, never seen one in person and only pics of one on the web. And people say Highlanders are rare huh? Anyone know of a white V6 4x4 with grey bumpers, white door handles and mirrors, auto, gold package (which I changed to chrome), and SR5?

Yea now that you said it yours is pretty rare, I have never seen one like that either. Maybe on the web but I would of mistaken it as a painted bumper like mine.
 
Good near flush mounting option for the rack

I saw a post somewhere where the guy used "channel" -something like electrical guide used in utility closets.

Crafty idea you employed to get the rack a lot closer to the roof itself.

Like the painted bumpers but the lower valance on the front bumper being a different black now kinds of stands out. Always good to see my fellow whiteys out there though....

Like your version of the Satoshi mod that is kind of unique and distinctive also.

So the post you saw of the guy that used channel. Was the post on this form? Was he able to get the roof basket closer to the roof?
The lower valance im planing to get ride of it, as soon as I find a why to put some contraption to protect the radiator and looks clean.
Nice to see another manual white 4runner.

Looks good, great idea. I Have been thinking of a way to make my brackets thicker but maybe wider is the answer.

Do the brackets bend at all? and have you tested for weight?

So far i weight tested it to 240lbs stationary with me and my girl on the roof.
And no bending going on. Im sure the mounts can stand up to 500lbs no problem, but the limiting factor is the strength of the roof rails and the roof.

Yea it would be awesome to have a So Cal meet...let me know

Had to have been on here or Yota Tech I am thinking but now can not find it to save my life-I need to get better about bookmarking these kind of things. I have too many projects going at once....

Tried Google and search here and on Yota Tech, maybe it was IH8MUD. Your setup is good too of course.

I see, that is another good way to mount a roof basket. But I do like the fuel can holder, I think I should try to make one myself.

I was going insane looking for that bad boy...

glad to help Reina, once I get something in my head it consumes me until I get it solved.

More for my sanity and peace of mind. But I really like the look of what he put together.
