Yes I agree the original roof rack is a little too weak, considering part of the cross bar is made of plastic.
Anyways here is the items needed to build the custom mounts.
You need:
Two L shaped metal measuring 2 1/4 X 1 1/2 and 1 1/2 X 1 1/2. They are both 4 feet long.<br>

Then you would need bolts that would fit into the holes of the metal pieces.
Cut the metal pieces into 1 feet sections to provide good support.<br>

To hold the mounts to the roof rail I went to the junk yard and fround my self a 96-02 4Runner and took the metal slides with the bolt hole so I can add more mounting points to the roof rail. I added 5 of those metal slides to each side. I used bolts that holds the roof rail to the roof, alone with washers to bolt the mounts for security reasons. <br>

As you can see on the picture above I reused the long U bolt provided by Rola and a few more U bolts that I brought to secure the basket to the mounts.

After this simple steps you should have pretty good mounts to hold your basket. So far weight tested to 250lbs stationary.
