I carry fuel on the roof of my t4r ALL the time. Up to 15 gallons worth. First it was via 5gallon Jerry cans, then for the last 2 years or so, I moved to Rotopax. Never had a leak that I can remember. Never had any swelling, that wasn't resolved by venting them once a day as the manufacturer recommends.
Remember, if your that far out in the boonies, as soon as the main tank is down a 1/4, pour the spare fuel into the main tank the first chance you get. There is no bonus points for having a full spare tank on your roof at the end of the trip...
One last thought, if it does leak, I think it evaporates pretty dang fast, so you probably wouldn't even know it or see it unless your are like 7,9" and looking down on the roof. Automotive paint is tougher than you think and who doesn't like a little lived in look...
