Rough Icon Ride

I got the Icon Stage 2 done front and back, was reading all the positive reports on how great the ride is imp: Coming from Xreas (with 160k) the ride is waaaay harsher on slower speeds and harsh roads. Offroad and fast offroad is great but city driving kind of sucks, i am now replacing lots of suspension parts as the harsh ride has brought out all the little rattles and the truck feels like its going to fall apart on bumpy roads. Has anyone with ICON's messed with any settings to smooth this thing out? I am V8 but stock bumpers and light armor (sliders and skid).

how cranked are you? Im cranked a LOT on another brand and still have an amazing ride. Ive heard nothing but great about ICONs

This is the first I have ever heard of Icon being harsh.

My guess is something is installed improperly, or you have them over cranked.

Take off your front sway bar is the only thing I could advise you to do that doesn't have to do with taking apart the coilover. They ride rough. Even after the sway bar removal I still think they are rough. I'm actually trying to replace mine and go LT because, much like you, I'm getting rattles everywhere now. Also the way they're valved, they're meant to get softer the faster you go through the woops.

post up your center of wheel to fender heights and post a picture of the coil overs so we can see how cranked-preloaded they are. did you get the icon rear springs too? Do you think the front or rear is too stiff or both?

Click the link in my sig and look at the first picture, that would be what mine came preset at. I'm guessing OP's are the same.

Looking at the MT rear spring rates for the LT kit the medium rates are pretty mild. I wonder if somehow he got the Heavy rear springs. Or if something is off on the Nitrogen pressure in the shocks. Does Icon provide a shock dyno sheet and valving sheet w/ nitrogen charge pressure when they are shipped to you guys?

I think he would notice if he had the HD springs. Those are 3" lift springs with no weight. Not sure on the shock dyno, its been awhile since I got mine. But if I remember, I would say no.

You could go romp around the desert a few times. My coilovers seemed to get softer after a few break in sessions. Course, I still think they are way too rough on the street.

If it really starts to bother you, swap out the coil springs for 14" 600 lb ones. Or add a heavy bumper and skids.

what you are describing is a typical valving concern. The valving might have been set for a heavier vehicle. Did they tell you anything about the valving?

Icons are a bit stiff at slow speeds. Did MT leave them at the approx 2" lift setting the come preset to, or did they bump them up closer to 3".

I've come to think of it as just an Icon thing. I've never actually seen anyone say Icon's ride soft. And I'm sure there's a reason why Downsouth Motorsports offers a "street valving" for their Icon's. Things were made worse for me when I called Icon and some pompous douche answered my question with "we got the best ride out of it".

The guys at DSM are damn good guys. I honestly think they have taken the time to see what the consumer feels about the products and request specific DSM valving so that they don;t have to hear about people being dissatisfied.

When i got my Fox's i ran them for a few weeks then sent them off to be re-valved to my liking. One you go custom valved it's hard to use off the shelf stuff.

I have the extended travel remote resi fronts and MT LT rears, and when I first put them on, the rear was almost unbearable... I carry a full-size e-load spare tire, a cargo box, and a dog in the back at all times. The rear Icon shocks are valved to be stiffer in the last 2" of travel, and I think with the weight in the back, I was riding in that range. The ride in the front was nice, but the rear was almost unbearable. I put daystar 1.5"s in the back on top of the LT springs, and the ride is 1000x better in the back. I don't know if this helps, but it's the info that I have.

custom valving is definitely where its at. My fox's were too stiff to begin with. Thankfully i have a friend who works at Poly Performance and when i was in Pismo we changed the valving to what the shock pro recommended. So much better.

I'm sure you'll be fine. Its very rare you find someone that complains about the ride quality of Icon's. Even then, like LTDSC said, custom valving for street comfort. And if you order from Downsouth Motorsports they can put on lighter duty coils and maybe even revalve it before it leaves their warehouse.

I plan on putting a front bumper on after I get the kit, so maybe that will soften it up a bit as well.
