Rough idle/acceleration V8

I am trying to find out if this is normal for this engine. Obviously, I have the 4.7L V8. I spend a good deal of time sitting in my car with it idling because I have to wait between classes at my college, and when I rest my elbow on the center console, I can feel vibration at idle. I can feel it in the door panels and floor board too. With all the talk about how this is the smoothest V8 out there, I don't feel like I should be getting this vibration.

Also, it doesn't accelerate as smoothly as I would like. Especially when going up hills, it doesn't move smoothly across the power band. It feels like it is varying its efforts and kind of bouncing a bit, for lack of a better description. Any other V8 owners out there who could help me out, it would be greatly appreciated.

Can't speak for the V8, but I have a V6 2008 Sport 4X4 bought in December and it has a "hard" idle at times, especially if, like you, I am sitting in it waiting for more than a few minutes. It isn't bad at all, but every so often I feel a mild shuddering effect in my feet and legs. Also, in the door panel.

It was doing this not long after I got it whiile I was waiting in the service bay at the dealer (for a free car wash). I asked the service manager about it and he said it is normal with the 4Runner to have a bit rougher idle than most people expect. Again, it is a mild shudder, but from time to time I become aware of it.
 
I am sorry, I am not going to be much help here, but I do not feel any vibration at all in my truck. The only way I can tell it is running is by looking on RPM.
Something is definitely off. I would start with pulling codes with code reader.
 
I hate to overstate the obvious, but has the oil been changed lately and at the correct level? All other maintenance being kept up on? Unfortunately, I don't think you will get many answers here until you take it in and have it looked at. I would definitely take it in to a dealer or qualified Toyota shop to get an accurate diagnostic. Let us know what they come back with.
 
This shudder is very common in 4runners. I feel it more in mine than my wives. It vary's from vehicle to vehicle but its normal.

How many miles? Could be a coil pack.
 
I have a new runner with 1200 miles on it (left over 08) When I start it when the the engine is dead cold it does a small little shutter for a little ( wouldnt be noticed by someone who is not looking for it or someone not into cars) and when I start my 4runner I hear a random ticking/clicking type sound for the first 30 seconds or so? What is that?

Piston slap, completely normal.

57500. I cleaned the MAF yesterday and it seemed to help some. How would I check if it's a coil pack? To be honest, I really don't even know what a coil pack is.

In that case maybe it's best to just drive it into your Toyota Dealers Service Dept.;):

I agree I would do about anything to stay away from my Dealers Service Dept. But with today's computer controlled systems, it is not easy finding anyone else who has even a slight hint as to what is wrong.:(

My engine has 38,500 miles on it. It idles and runs as smooth as glass. I've never had another vehicle that idles so well.

Just take it to the dealer could be the throttle body or a coil pack. A coil pack is where the electrical current sent to the spark plug.

Is there a check engine light on? I bet it is a coil pack - take it to the dealer and report back!
 
There is no check engine light on, but I did just reset the check engine light, thinking it was for an oil change. I suppose I will give in and go see my service department. Hopefully this isn't something expensive.

(And yes, definitely the best avatar) :D
 
tkae it to autozone and have them read the code if it comes on again. I assume they will be the same as a land cruiser b/c of the same v8 so the coil pack failure codes are;

P0300 for multiple cylinder misfires
P0301 cylinder 1 misfire
P0304 cylinder 4 misfire
Etc
Etc

As for cylinder numbers - looking at the engine from the hood cylinder 1-3-5-7 are on the driver side and cylinders 2-4-6-8 are on the passenger side.

Good luck - coil packs are a common failure on this engine although 57k is kind of early but not out of the realm of possibilities.

They aren't expensive at all either.
 
oh yes forgot,is there any odor after parking it and driving with a failed coil pack is not an issue.

After reading your reply it sounds like your maint light was on not a cel.

If the cel does come on before getting to the dealer don't be alarmed if the vsc off and trac lights come on as it's all part of the Xmas tree to get your attention.
