rough idle

Started my 99 this morning and had a very rough idle. The truck was in the garage about 40+ degrees. Put in gear and drove off with very poor power and still rough acceleration. I went about a mile and it cleared up.

I drove for about 6 miles. turned the truck off for about 10 min, then re-started. Smooth as silk.

Any ideas?

Clean your MAF sensor / check your TPS. Also a search should give you a few good ideas:thumb3:

Mine actually does the exact same thing just about every morning.

If I give it about a minute or two to warm up, it never happens.

so I had no issues all week. I did however have to refuel after only 170 miles. Then this morning after about a mile of driving I had another rough idle situation. After about a mile of running terrible it cleared up again. I did notice that if I put the gas pedle to the floor I have no power.

I refueled and put in some fuel injector cleaner and restarted. I now have a check engine light.

AutoZone checked and it was only a Po300 "Random Multiple Cylinder Misfire". He recommended a tune up. Anyone had this issue. Did plugs and wires resolve?

Which engine?
What is the mileage?
Was your last tune up less than 30,000 miles ago?

Some basic maintenance......

My last tune up was probably about 30k ago.

I just went today to Valvoline Instant Oil Change. They offer a "Fuel System Cleaning". This includes cleaning the throttle body around and inside, gas additive and some other fluid injected directly into the engine to burn off internal carbon.

During this process the engine idle very rough and exhausted all kinds of smoke. It idles very smooth now. We cleared the CEL. Hopefully it does not return.

It happened again this morning. After about a mile of driving it went away. What could this be?

I guess my next move is to replace plugs, wires, and coils?

Sparks have a 30,000 mile interval, took the factory plugs out at 80,000 (when I bought it) worn, but still looked really good.
Would probably change those spark wires though, with that mileage.

I replaced the spark plugs and plug wires this weekend with factory Denso plugs and Toyota wires. WOW I did not realize how bad the performance actually was. Now the throttle response is great and I have no more hesitation when I stomp on the gas.

All symptoms are gone.
