Rough Start and Stall at Idle

I have a 2002 automatic "sport edition" 4runner, never had any issues with it, just today I went to start it after getting lunch and it had a very rough start and stumbled to life, then at idle just stalled out, I am able to get it to start if I rev the crap out of it as soon as it starts though. Afraid to let it down to idle while driving with fear of stalling, just a real pain. What could this be? No CEL.

I have been experiencing this as well lately on a hot restart. Starts then instantly dies. I end up having to hold down the throttle a little while turning it over. No CEL

Sounds like you're getting good spark and you're getting fuel. There's a number of things you can check fairly easily before jumping in too deep. I just did a write up in my build on the MAF Sensor. It's pretty simple to clean. Check your connector and make sure you don't have any broken wires.

Since it's an 02, you can clean your throttle body and check your cable tension going to the throttle body. It should have tension.

Check your air filter to ensure it's clean. Do a visual of your vacuum lines and all connectors.

Try running a bit of Seafoam through your vacuum line. No more than a 1/4 cup.

EDIT: When did you change your plugs last?

From there the next thing I would check if it's not fixed is your fuel pressure. You can pick up a tester at Autozone or other parts store.

That's a start. Without any codes it's difficult to "armchair" quarterback.

I just had coils, wires, and plugs replaced about a month ago, so I don't believe it is that without a code. I literally bought some MAF cleaner at AutoZone, and it was there that it wouldn't start, maybe my rig is trying to tell me something, I will clean that tomorrow.

When my '02 SR5 did this exact same thing it
was resolved when I had spark plugs & spark plug wires
replaced & throttle bodies cleaned.

MatthewRM18 Just curious, how does it start and run when it's cold?

Usually it seemed labored at cold start, but it would just take longer to crank, but I just assumed it was because it was cold. It is also sluggish when cold, but that is usually normal. Today it didnt make a difference if it was cold or warm when I started it, it would start fine, then struggle and die. Once it is completely warmed up and has been running for a while I can stop at a light or something and it will not stall(so far).

Wondering if you have a bad tank of gas. Sounds more fuel related than sensor related since it doesn't matter whether it's cold or warmed up. Seafoam in the tank for your next fill-up perhaps...

I am going to clean the MAF tomorrow, and if it doesn't clear up I will try that. I am going to also run the tank of gas I have in it right now almost to empty, just in case.
