RPM's at 60MPH

see post #5. You absolutely, 100% cannot compare difference in RPM truck to truck unless you know what gear ratio each truck has.

AND what size tires are on it. AND what gear it's in. AND whether or not it's auto or manual trans.

thats really not a big difference, i ran a 430 rear with a 410 front for two years without braking things... and honestly i could not tell the difference -hence not knowing that i was running a 430 rear end...

i think the one thing here that evey one is over looking is tire size... that will have just as much if not more impact than a 410 vs a 430 rear end.

4.10 and 4.30's were just as an example. A runner with 3.90 gears vs a runner with 4.56's is going to be a big difference. I didn't want to get into tire size because IMO, Unless you're comparing someone's 31's to a set of 35's, a 265/75/16 isn't going to offer much difference in rpm than say a 265/70/17, or any of the other minor differences in tire sizes that the majority of forum use.

We could get really crazy with this, tire size, gear ratio's, trans ratio's, inconsistencies in tachometers, etc. the two biggest factors are gear ratios and tire size for sure.

Okay so just to provide some more info - I called the dealer to find out it came from the factory with a 4.10 gear ratio. Also I am just running the standard 16" split 3 spoke wheels with the factory suggested tire size. And the 2600 RPMs are while I'm in 5th gear. The 4R runs fine to me just sluggish compared to my wifes 99 Auto. Any suggestions? Thx

if you have 4.56 gears, 265/70r16 and a 2.7 that sounds about right, at 60 mph im a hair over 2000 rpm, and ive got 3.93 gears 265/70r16 and the 3.4.

so with a little math here

2000rpm*(4.56/3.93)*(.838/.705)=2760rpm

also because the 3.4 is more powerful, it makes sense that the 2.7 would need the extra rpms to be able to keep up at speed.

Can't tell you about 60mph, but I'm 1000@70mph, 1500@80mph. 2001 sport edition auto 4.10 gears, running 265/75R16

That's a noticeable difference for me after switching from stock 265/70R16.

there is no way you are only turning 1000rpms at 70mph no way at all

3.4 auto here and according to the dash (GPS may vary 1-2mph depending on speed) I am dead nuts 2000rpm at 65mph.

Rememeber - The speedometer (not GPS) and tachometer relationship will never change after altering gear and tire sizes. It will only change by replacing the trans speedometer gear with one that has a different tooth count.

Also, for guys with the sticks, what gear are you in at 60?

I have the 2.7. In 4th gear I'm probably around 3000 at 60mph but if cruise at 55 I'm at 2800. In 5th gear I cruise at 70mph @ 2800rpms.

I did a test the other day.

4th gear is 3000rpm at 60 but only 2400rpm in 5th gear.
4:10 gears 275/70/16

I'll update when I switch to 265/70/17 in a week or so, shouldn't be much of a difference.

i would guess 4.10s with that low and that amount of drop from 4th to 5th. next time you have the 3rd member out, count teeth on the ring, 41=4.10, 43=4.30 -not that you didnt already know that.

it's easier to count driveshaft rotations, but would be a bit tricky to differentiate between 4.10's and 4.30's.

Also, OP, engine performance won't affect the engine RPM/speed ratio either. Its either a gearing variation or your transmission is running in a lower gear for some reason.

All true, except both speed and RPM are analog needle read-outs, so gauge error is also a possibility. I thought about confirming mine with a digital read-out on my Torque/Android. I think it's a good idea after 15 years to see if the needles are true to what the ECM is telling them.

those are not my personal beliefs, so go shove it... nor are they accurate statements. just like saying the most common gear ratios is 4.10 and 4.30. just with the "generic statements" i gave as an example of the off kilter thought, its the ones that are mentioned or "come to light" that are ingrained in our heads, thus making it seam so, for most people perception is reality, such is the case with both statements above.
