the button is like a psudeo awd option when you shift it's 4x4-hi
they do difference things but i always push the button first just because it seems like it would be better moving through all of the selections instead of jumping to what i need, but that's my old school way of thinking and i have no mechanical evidence to back that up, it's just how it used to be on old 4x4's
and driving with the locker on is fine in any condition if you only follow one rule DO NOT TURN YOUR STEERING WHEEL, GO STRAIGHT ONLY, lot of people don't know or forget that drag race cars have a spool or a locker and are used on road all of the time, it is not the road surface that matters as much but the maneuvers you try to do with it locked, even stupid little ricers use lockers on the road every now and again for drifting comps but they blow stuff out alot as well from that, so for us best use of the locker is pretty described in the manual, you only need the locker when you are stuck or trying to go over a large obstacle, i can see no reason why you would be traveling faster then 5-10 mph with the locker engaged.
so if you use it as it was meant to be used you will always be engaging it off road on a slippery surface at low speeds, NO ONE drives a trial where a locker is required at 50mph....NO ONE...
