When I turn the lights on the green "D" light switches to the orange "R" light comes on and it's like the tranny goes into neutral, I give it gas and the tac goes up, but I don't move forward. When I turn the lights off, it goes back to normal again.

Just wondering if anyone has ideas as to what is wrong??? The car does have 278,000 on it but I just can't bear to give it up!!! I love that car!!!

Sounds like you've got a short somewhere. What happens if you turn your lights on when you're driving?

I immediately lose power, acts the same whether I'm parked or driving.

Definitely sounds like a short. Download the factory service manual and check out the wiring diagrams to start tracing the short.
