Running like crap...

So my 4Runner hasn't been running too smoothly lately and I'm trying to figure out exactly what is wrong. I have been really strapped for cash lately so it has, unfortunately, been getting mechanically neglected somewhat. I have done as much as I can afford to do so far.

Problem 1: Rough idle. When in park or neutral it idles fine, when in drive it vibrates crazily. This seems to be attributed to slight drop in RPM when in drive as opposed to neutral/park.

- I have cleaned the TB, IAC, K&N air filter, and MAF sensor. Seems to help for a bit but then comes back. No codes.

Problem 2: (Maybe in conjunction with problem 1) Vibration while driving. Slightly noticeable at lower speeds but mainly very noticeable between 60mph and 70mph (seems to die down after 70). Goes away pretty much immediately when I let off the gas, or put in neutral. U-joints? Driveshaft?

-Tires have been rotated and balanced and are in fairly good shape. See my signature for suspension mods. May have nothing to do with this, but the steering rack is going to shit. I'm just filling with PS fluid and hoping I make it til tax return time to buy a new one.

What about your plugs or wires?

A bad spark is always more noticeable when there is a load on the engine, wich is what you describe in the 2 problems.

I would start with checking the plugs and put some water on the wires...

new on here but just saw your post. i have a 00 and had a problem that sounds like yours. rough idle at times . hesitate under a load and the it would pull it self thought it. did plugs, wires, pcv, fuel filter, also had a code for a front o2. cleaned maf, tps, iac, and throttle body. did all that and wouldn't set a code but still ran crappy. my buddy works for toyota and tested the maf and it ended being that. put a new toyota one in and it cleared it all up. also added a k&n filter. but also talked to a guy that was telling me if you put to much oil on a k&n filter over time it will destroy the maf. not saying it is your problem but may be a place to test and start with

could be your balljoint i had to have mine replaced and have heard about it from other 4runner owners
