Rust on undercarriage, deal breaker for purchase?

Sometime ago I purchased a 00 Tundra 4WD, 2uz-fe with 150k miles from a friend which had the pink milkshake issue plus really really bad rust for $500..
I may still have pics somewhere, almost 2 inches long perforations, I mean it was pretty bad...
So if I may give one tip:
Before you start using reformer get all the salt grime out from INSIDE the frame and other nooks and corners, I would park on a slope on a hot sunny day, stick a hose through as many holes in the frames as possible and wash with a jet tipped hose. Once dry you can use rattle can sprays to coat the inside and prevent further rusting from inside-out or I have seen kits for insides of the frame from Amazon/ebay.

FYI: While researching toyota frame rust issue, I found out that there was/is a rust recall for Toyota's frames and I was actually offered a free frame from Toyota but I was going to be responsible for every bolt and other item they broke while changing the frame and eventually I decided that it was cost prohibitive given the vehicle's condition and age.

Run far away! Strange, I've only seen cars 2003 cars here with rust issues. I have a 2004 which we never really maintained, and the frame is more or less okay. I wonder if they changed something between 2003 and 2004.
as to OP. that 4runner looks pretty darn clean. dealing with a mechanic in MD. it seems they don't put liquid acid on the roads there. It does seem like it has salt on it.
I say this to every post like this. Grind off all the flakey rust/paint. (which seems you have minimal of) Degrease the frame, get inside the frame. Wait for it to dry. and blast the frame with fluid film. your frame will have no problem lasting another 5+ years if you just do that every year. Change out the rear diff breather just to be sure. after 10 years it due on any rust belt car.

on long island what i see indoor photos is really good. looks like it was never taken out in snow.My 4R has much more than that despite undercarriage washing after snow. My upper control arm brackets both failed so now the frame mist be replaced and also the rear end housing. Has anyone repaired upper control arm brackets? Local dealer and corp customer assistance is no help. I had used eastwood rest encapsulator on the lower parts of the frame and it worked pretty well.

Is that a crack in the crossmember above the LCA alignment bolt? Front skid probably has rusted bolts also, common problem, have to use antiseize when installing them after an oil change. Every used Toyota I've bought has had at least one skidplate bolt non-functional.

That looks pretty bad, you should do something about that unless you want your truck to collapse in 50k miles.

You would have to grind or brush it all off, and repaint. I would imagine that would take a lot of time. Plan on replacing the exhaust eventually too.
If you are looking to save some money, I would rather it be mechanically in disrepair than have to deal with the rusted underside. Or look for one without rust and in good mechanical condition to save yourself lots of time.

The AC drip is usually on that side.

Hi, All! New comer here. Sorry to bring up this old post, since I am not sure where to ask these specific questions regarding skid plate from my 4gen v8 4wd runner.
Long story short, I don't know when the skid plate got removed. Maybe during the oil change a couple of years ago. I plan to get a new one installed in dealership (my garage doesn't have sufficient room to work on it). But I found some pipes underneath are quite rusty (pls see the attached pic). They are near oil filter, and I assume they're supposed to be covered by skid plate.
My questions are:
1. do you know what are these pipes for?
2. are they in bad shape?
3. is it better to have those pipes replaced before adding a new skid plate?

Chances are the skidplates were taken off because several bolts were snapped off and are now lodged in the holes; it will be a royal pain to drill them out, but is necessary to get new skids on.
1) I believe the pipes are for power steering and AC, but don't quote me on that.
2) I don't think they look to be in particularly bad shape, mine are worse, although they aren't great.
3) Not really. Skidplates are 8 easy to access (on a lift, not too bad on the ground) bolts; that shouldn't be a consideration as to when to replace those lines. It's like saying, "as long as the tire is off, what all should I replace on the suspension so I don't have to go through the trouble of taking the tire off again later". If there's reason to replace them now then do, otherwise don't do it just because the skidplates are already conveniently off, they aren't hard to get off/back on again.

That is the higher pressure line for the power steering, and I could only wish mine looked that good (which is why I know what it is, because I’m planning to change it this fall). I would definitely consider changing though, even though it’s not as bad as mine because if it blows because of rust, you will be left stranded, or risk burning up the PS pump. They seem to be available and somewhat affordable on RockAuto just as an FYI...
