Rust preventative testing

I decided to do a little testing of some different rust preventatives I had in my garage. The purpose of this test is to see which of these products works best at preventing rust on mild steel (like your frame ect).

I know there are many products I didn't test, I just used what I had minus having to purchase fluid film since I know so many people use it.

There are 9 different products:

WD40
LPS 2
LPS 3
Fluid Film
Marine fogging oil
Cooking spray (why not!)
Zep lubricating/penetrating spray
ATF
5W-30 motor oil (Synthetic blend)

And a control of course.

The material is 7ga cold rolled CQ mild steel. These were laser cut slugs from some parts at my work.

All of the test pieces were thoroughly cleaned with acetone. I also wore latex gloves while applying the products and wiped them clean after I applied each product to prevent cross contamination.

Each product was put on a new gun cleaning patch and liberally applied to each disc. I did my best to apply approximately the same amount of product per disc (I did not skimp on any of the products).

I waiting 6 hours before I applied the salt water solution from a spray bottle. Each disc was misted with 2 sprays from the bottle.

Every day at 3:30pm (central) I will apply another 2 sprays of the salt solution to each disc and take a picture of the results.

The samples will be kept on my bench in my detached garage (not climate controlled). This test is being done in Wisconsin for reference.

I'll keep doing this until I'm sick of it.

But seriously, this is great. I love studies like this. It will be interesting to see how it turns out!

Based on the amount of bacon my family eats, I should be able to provide enough grease for the entire 3rd gen community....

Excellent idea, I'll definitely be checking this thread later on. Just POR-15ed my frame last winter and it still worries me.

Interesting. Curious to see how this will turn out. You should leave it outside for few months. Apply chassis saver and or por15. Leave it outside for few months. And see how it looks.

Would you say, rust would stop spreading if one of the elements were stopped? Let’s say we seal up the rust and don’t allow air and/or moisture get to it. Would rust still spread ? Or simply be where it is.

I know this will sound stupid. But what if silicone is applied over the rust lol.

Rust bubbles seem to travel well under paint so I don't think that will work, it will just trap the moisture and salt.

I'll be checking too. The salt/chemicals are eroding my 2nd Gen. I don't want the same to happen to my 5th Gen.

Great Idea. I used Por 15 under mine several years ago. Even though I followed the directions, I must have messed up somewhere. A year or so later a lot of it was pealing off. After that, I bought a die grinder and started to go over the largest easiest areas. I used Rustoleum Rust Converter and it's held up pretty well.

I've got several of these products in my wishlist on Amazon so I'm really looking forward to see the results.

Day 1 update.

The RPs that have kept the tests pieces rust free after 24 hours are:

Cooking spray!
WD40
LPS 2
LPS 3
Zep
Fluid film

The ones that are already showing rust are

ATF
5W 30
Marine fogging oil

I’m just gonna go to a grocery store and buy a case of cooking spray. The next discussion will be wether to get Pam cooking spray or a house brand.

Make sure you get the butter flavor one, it adds additional protection!

Day two results

Test pieces that now show rust:

WD40 (very slight discoloration)
ZEP

Test pieces that are still totally rust free:

LPS 2
LPS 3
Fluid film
Cooking spray

The WD40 is just barely showing some rust color in a couple small spots. We'll see how it looks tomorrow.

My bet is on LPS 3 or fluid film.

LPS 2 is good stuff too but it is not considered a "long term RP". I believe in the product description it is for "indoor use" but it does state that it provides up to one year protection (again, indoors though).

If you have some extras, here's an idea. Let them build up some rust, then spray FF or LPS on top of the rust, then monitor them to see if the rust continues or if the product slows it down.

I figure we're already applying these products to frames with existing surface rust.
