Rust Prevention Product Experience?

My Dad sent me this youtube instructional for Rust Doctor. I really like the idea if it works the way they're claiming. Especially if it eliminates the need for hours of sandblasting or wire-wheeling. Maybe some of the Chem guys can chime in.

To permanently transform rust into a corrosion proof paintable surface? Seems too good to be true.

only works with surface/flash type of rust, once the material is gone it's gone, sand blasting and wire wheeling simply remove the rust from these pits and allows you to seal the bare steel fresh, with these sort of things like above they encapsulate the rust molecules and nothing more so essentially your still painting over rust and once that that bond is broke you back at square one, at least that's my take on it.......in restoration work there are no real short cuts you get out of it what you put into it, these rust encapsulators are good viable products but are not a miracle cure , in short nothing will ever take the place of sand blasting and wire wheeling but if it's something your trying to make due with for the next 5~6 years your probably ok.

That makes me wonder how strong of a bond the base layer rust has with its metal host? And if its as you say just a rust encapsulator then the claim that it converts to black magnetite leaves me confused. But I understand its finishing flaws, I would only consider it for undercarriage preservation and other nonpretty things.

the only way i know to turn red rust into black rust is lots of heat......

I've used something similar products with great success, rust converters by LockTite and Permatex.
They aren't water/latex based though, acetone is a major ingredient.

I heard something about a paint that will "eat" and stop rust. Dunno much about it. Just word of mouth. Think it was made by either Rustoleum or DuPont. Again prolly someone yapping out their brown eye.

This may be OT, but if the part can be taken off the truck, then one alternative to remove rust is electrolytic rust removal.

I've done that on a lot of OLD tool boxes that I've brought back to life. Works like a charm.
