There's a shop in NJ that does undercarriage restorations all day long on Toyotas. Coatings and welding if necessary. After doing some of that myself, I think I'll gladly pay for someone to deal with the rust dust and paint fumes.

That being said I think the best course of action if you decide to DIY is an angle grinder with knotted wire wheel. Grind the crap off and then treat with Ospho. Then Rustoleum Rusty metal primer, and then satin black. Then protect that with PB Blaster Surface Shield. Getting a headache just remembering that process though.

I sand, primer, paint. Except on the rear axle, for some reason I can never get the repair to last long, it always flakes of despite using the same technique that works everywhere else.

I use metal primer and cover it with either Rustoleum black enamel or Por15. Despite what everyone says about Por15, it's Rustoleum that's failed more.

Have had good results onshore using what is used offshore for surface prep.
SKYCO OSPHO after wire brushing and Acetone wipe. Qt. goes a long way.

I like the idea of having someone who know how to do it properly. I do not have access to a lift. This will prevent me from doing the Best job than can be done.

Recently did mine with spray can rustoleum rust converter + a rustoleum oil based enamel top coat by hand. Was kinda annoying to do by hand, but I had to replace a bunch of suspension parts anyways so had a lot of room to work while it was out.

The past few years I had just been doing rust converter + another spray (bed liner or others) and By the next year it always needed rescraped and done again. I'm hoping the enamel top coat helps shield it longer.

There's no miracle in a can. The Rustoleum will look pretty for a few months but won't do jack. You need to grind or sandblast the surface to get anywhere. Better off Fluid Filming.
