Rusted frames from recall

Not to mention I have seen third gen frames in as bad a condition due to neglect and lack of salt maintenance...

That's true, but the title misleads people into thinking there's a 3rd-gen frame recall. It's like a tabloid headline :p

So I was at the dealer to have them look at what was "banging" in the back.
Turned out to be a loose spare tire . Big deal.

But the tech mentions my frame was rusted and should be looked at.
It wasn't broken and no holes or cracks that we could see but it was 18 years old so who knows.

I went on about my annual if not semi annual under spray done at the dealer since new and how this shouldn't even be an issue and what about the frame recall?

Well they're going to file some type of claim/report with Toyota Canada to see what happens but said that the recall does not include 4Runners so don't count on it

I called Toyota Canada myself to voice my concerns but they just directed me back to the dealer.

We'll see what happens.

I just picked up my 99 SR5 a few weeks ago only to find out that the ass that had owned it previously welded sheet metal over the rust and spray painted it black. Suffice it to say that I wasn't amused. As luck would have it, someone I met through 3g4m on FB pointed me to a rust free frame that was only a couple of hours for me. I picked it up and its currently getting sandblasted, etched, POR15'd and undercoated. Guess I have to keep it forever now. Went in for an oil change and left with a frame. WTF.

With any luck it will be back on Monday and I'll have pics. You're in the Bronx? I lived in Bklyn for the best 7 years of my life. I still go back for pizza every couple of months because NY pizza kills it. Pizza in Boston SUCKS by comparison!

Hahah I can say a lot more than just pizza xD. I'll leave it at that =P. Did you get your 4runner from NYC? salt here is terrible! I think I just saved my 2002's 4runner life by taking over maitiance of it. my dad never washed the under side...

Where did you get it sent too? Are you planning on doing the swap yourself?

By the way guys, this is what I got for my our cars,

http://www.theunderwasher.com/ You can make it yourself, but I have no time to. about a 5 dollar difference if you do it yourself. pretty nify idea. mix some degreaser or salt x, it removes all the salt from under your body in 5-10 min. doing that every week in the winter (not the degreaser part) + FF + short dry to blow drive the is my plan moving forward... hopefully it works...

Do you by chance have a Thrush Turbo muffler and white in color? I know of someone who bought a 99 5-speed 4Runner earlier this year and found the same issue and made the seller take it back...

The Underwasher :: Hose accessory that lets you clean under your car, RV, boat or ATV! There's tons more in the city that's better. That said, I still miss it all the time! The gf and I are doing to take a ride down just before Christmas to see the tree at Rock Center.

As far as the frame goes, I was going to strip it myself and then realized how much of a pain that would be so I took it to a shop in NH to have it media blasted and sprayed with etching primer and then I'll paint it with POR15. Thankfully I have a good friend at the Toyota dealership with a very understanding boss so they're doing the actual swap there for short money so it can be documented and I know that it got done right.

I'll have it petroleum coated for the winter after that although I don't see any snow in the near future. That was a good idea. Since everything is coming apart anyway, I'm taking the opportunity (and free labor) to do front brake pads, rotors and stainless hoses as well as poly upper and lower control arm and sway bar bushings. Not to mention new 17" black TRD wheels and BFG KO2's. It's been an expensive 2 weeks!

Nope. Mine is stellar blue. The seller is a d-bag and wouldn't return my calls so I paid him a visit. Suffice it to say we're working out an arrangement...

The truck has 162k on it and with the exception of the frame is in really nice shape plus the t-belt, water pump and coolant was done 20k ago so I decided to keep it and make it right.
